How would getting the Ace of Cups have been different from getting the Ace of Pentacles?I read this on the internet http://www.tarotforum.net/showthread.php?t=120354 It seems like good news either way, I was just wondering since the ace of cups says basically a feeling if soulmates will develop. It seems like a deeper love than the Ace of Pentacles shows.

I think the AP represented the conditions in the immediate future, not the ultimate destination. This response from another forum seemed to resonate:

Aces are seeds, beginnings..According to the cards Pools drew for you. You will have to work very hard and "water that seed" if you want it to grow. Pentacles are slow, and it will take a lottt of patience & time. If not, then it won't go anywhere, so you have to make sure to work hard/follow the advice to a T. Temperance is a major arcana card, sort of something out of your control (lack of chemistry u can say). You want to unblock that lack of chemistry with the Ace of Pentacle's advice  IP: Logged |

Basically to keep yourselves grounded, and try to find things that you two share in common, try to focus more on common things than differences. Get to know each other a little better, and continue taking it slow. Take the time to get to know each other really well

So if all those things were so bad for you, why do you want him back? I understand wanting to take it slow and be friends but, from my perspective of what you've posted, you're doing this with the expectation that it'll lead to a relationship. I did a 5 card spread for you. 1. Current situation - fool
2. Obstacle - devil
3. Deep inner feelings - 6 of pentacles
4. Advice card - justice
5. Outcome - 9 of swords The fool card in its position indicates a new beginning right now. A fresh start if you will. The devil represents a few things in tarot: lust, codependency, addictive behaviors. You stated above he is addicted to smoking weed so there ya go. I'm not so sure his addiction has been cured....Your deep inner feelings are you would like a balanced relationship, one in where its evenly give and take. I say this bc this card is about reciprocation. The justice card as advice even further more supports the msg of the previous card: balance. You need to weigh things in a rational way, not an emotional way. Seek balance with your situation. If you stay on the current path your on, you will just stress yourself out and create needless anxiety. 9 of swords shows this loud and clear. The nice thing about this card is it is just a mindset, and negative thoughts and fears are making the situation seem worse than what it actually is. Do you have like a sense of impending doom here about all of it? Things wll turn out as they are meant to. Just take a deep breath and don't worry so much about the future of it all. I don't think we are meant to have all the answers which probably doesn't sound like comfort but I say it from a positive place. The justice card says to think with your head and not your heart.
