Planet Aspects
The Lights: The Sun and Moon
At the time of our birth, the planets (through their configurations and relationships) tell us
something about how things were when we were born. Each planet points to special qualities
within us. Yet, of all the planets, the two most important planets to astrologers are the "lights,"
the Sun and the Moon. From where we stand here on Earth, the great shining Sun by day and
the reflecting Moon at night are our constant companions. They have much to tell us as to
where we have been and where we are headed.
The Sun: Your Self and Future
From the Sun comes light, that which draws us into life. The Sun represents all the changes
we have not yet taken, that part of us that we have not yet experienced but are headed toward.
The Sun represents our identity, or self, in that it is toward these that we are moving and
developing. Thus, it also represents that which we will become: older people, authorities --
those we look toward, or up to. Our essence, or future. Teachers, gurus, and older (more

Uranus: Break-Thrus & Insights
Our responsibilities can tend to weigh us down, and we each have our particular ways of
getting around (or breaking through) the mass of obstructions that tends to congeal around us.
The planet that has to do with how we get beyond the difficulties and problems life presents us
is Uranus. Here is the way insights come to us, how we discover or come to know and
understand ourselves. It has to do with finding new uses for old things, and it rules inventions
and sudden insights into our life -- everything that is unusual, eccentric, and out of the ordinary.
It is the reverse of the status quo and is always unconventional and heretical. Uranus is, in many

important indicators of the current situation in which we find ourselves. They can provide

These include where planets fall by element (earth, air, fire, or water signs), modality (cardinal, fixed, or
mutable signs), or house (angular, succedent, or cadent). Also included are positive and negative (odd or
even) signs. Generally a nice, even distribution is favored, but a preponderance or a lack of any one
flavors a chart in a particular fashion.
Throughout, lack of any element will find the native seeking out those who have extra of the same to
make up for it. Those who lack water tend to be attracted to very emotionally sensitive types, for instance,
which can seem a strange contradiction, since they don't seem to belong together or communicate well.
Similarly, airless types may seek more professorial companions to explain things they don't know and
probably won't understand, anyway. The fireless are often attracted to religion and find themselves
studying the sermon which everyone else knew to ignore in favor of the choir. Earthless are the least
concerned about making up for their lack, and tend to move blissfully ahead, oblivious to their risks --
possibly because they either succeed wildly against the odds, or perish without further ado because of
them.

Fire:
This element concerns inspiration and change, and lots of it makes for
good orators, preachers, singers, motivators, or anything that sets
people on fire and elevates the spirit. Lack of the element may leave
the native unmoved by the usual hype but also not easily stirred when
aspiring to be, as in spiritual quests.
Earth:
This lends solidity and reliability to a chart, keeps your feet on the
ground. A total lack of earth makes for a people who can be extreme
risk takers because they don't really know better. They go where
angels fear to tread, and those same angels bear them up lest they
dash their foot upon a stone -- on a really good day, that is.
Air:
This enables thought and communication, the intellectual side of things.
A lot of air makes for a rather cerebral type, whereas lack of air means
that explaining things may be meaningless. Results, not talk, gut-level
or emotional evaluation may take precedence over logic and careful,
explainable planning.
Water:
This is all about the ability to sense and communicate feelings, and lots
of water makes for emotional types. Lack of water tends to lead to
emotional cluelessness, a problem of not being about to pick up the
usual social cues and unconscious gestures, leading to embarrassment
or faux pas without intending or expecting it.

Cardinal:
Lots of this makes for a very assertive personality, someone who steps
into the breach even if, perhaps, there isn't one. It's great for situations
where independence is a virtue and occasional toe-stepping is not
taken too severely. None at all tends to make for a more retrenched
personality, or one who opts for multiple choice and nuances, not the
first solution that comes to hand.
Fixed:
Lots of this makes people, well, fixed. They take a stance and stand by

their qualities. Lack of it tends to make for lack of diplomacy or even an
understanding of the need for it – sometimes lack of manners, simply

Planets here are considered stronger, and lots of angularity makes for a
more immediate, forceful presence. None at all tends to create
wallflowers, or at least those who don't jump for the first dance.
Succedent:
Planets here are considered more durable but slower to manifest, and
lots of them make for greater long-term vision and action. Lack of it
leans toward haste or hesitation, people who are on the leading or
trailing edges of the action but not really at the heart of it.
Cadent:
Planets here are traditionally thought to be weaker, or at least less
active compared to other places, and they tend to manifest later rather
than sooner. It's great for fence-sitting and avoiding ill-fated
bandwagons by never actually getting on one or at least getting off fast.
A lack here makes for less flexibility and a certain inability to cover your
back.

Introduction
Grant Lewi (1902 - 1951) is a legendary figure among twentieth century astrologers. He was a
writer and editor for the two largest astrological magazines of the time. His two books, Heaven
Knows What and Astrology for the Millions , were the first astrological books to become best
sellers and even today, over fifty years later, they remain among the best introductions to the
subject of astrology.
The astrological interpretations found in Heaven Knows What and Astrology for the Millions
were unique, fresh, and simple. Llewellyn George, the prominent astrologer of the time, remarked
that Lewi's interpretations must be intuitive because they were unlike any that had been written
before him. Today these interpretations remain energetic and forceful and, though some references
are now dated, Lewi's text still provides some of the clearest insights found anywhere in the
literature of astrology.
Lewi was determined to make astrology more accessible to the average person, but while
popularizing the subject he never watered it down or reduced it to the level found in "sun sign"
astrology. Writing before computers were available, he made his books function as the computer,
providing the reader with tables to generate their own charts or horoscopes and then linking his
interpretations to the information found there. Lewi would have made good use of the computer, so
much in his books seem to anticipate them. In his writing he tried to emulate the interpretation
process by using a computerless version of artificial intelligence: the meaning of a planet in a sign
doesn't stand alone but is modified by the other aspects found in your chart. Many of his comments
depend on a combination of factors and for this reason you will sometimes find that he has
something different to say about an aspect in your chart than he does for the same aspect in your
friend's chart.
This report calculates your chart for you and then collects all of Lewi's comments strictly
according to the astrological factors found there. The text contained here is valid even for those
who don't know their time of birth - Lewi focused on those factors that are in effect throughout the
birthday. The only exception to this is the case of the Moon which can move between 12 and 14
degrees in a day, so if the positions were calculated for noon then the Moon could be as much as 6
or 7 degrees different and possibly even change signs. If you don't know your time and the texts
that involve the Moon seem unlikely, you may wish to compare reports done for the beginning and
the end of the day.
At all times, Lewi’s aim has been to show how astrology can be used as an aid in living a more
satisfying and fulfilling life. Astrology offers indications and pointers - and sometimes insights - to
situations that you find in life. It doesn’t tell you what to do about them, but if it offers you a better
understanding of the situation, then you are in a better position to decide for yourself what to do. To
quote Grant Lewi:
"It is not limitations that eats out the heart, but inaction, the knowledge of powers not used, the
sense of having failed to develop to the utmost. The overcoming of fate is not the overcoming of

limitations: that is impossible. It is the exercise of free will, the assertion of the full self, expanding
to its utmost with the tools at hand, in the circumstances that are set. Astrology, through the
interpretation of the horoscope, assists men to the achievement of their maximum by indicating to
them the lines along which their will may be most progressively applied, the goals to be sought,
and the individual means by which each one may arrive at the outermost boundaries of his world."
Horoscope of Birth
Your horoscope of birth is the blueprint of your personality and character as indicated by the
position of the Sun, the Moon and the eight planets on the date of your birth. This section is
devoted to each of these members of the solar system.
The planets are the antennae and arms of the horoscope, of which the body and soul are the Sun
and Moon. No planet will ever cause you to act counter to the testimony of the Sun and Moon in
their combined influence on you. Remember this when you proceed with the following readings.
All planetary vibration must be considered in light of the basic solar-lunar readings, for these are
your character, your basic nature, which the planets will help or hinder but cannot materially
change.
According to the sign position of your Sun, one planet will be more important than the others
and should probably be read first. Your Sun is in Leo and your dominant planet is the Sun (also
Mars and Jupiter). Not only the action of this ruling planet will be very important in your life, but
also the attribute over which it rules. Thus Gemini, ruled by Mercury, lives a great deal in the
senses; Libra, ruled by Venus, responds most readily to emotional stimuli; and so on. Study your
ruler carefully.
Remember in all planetary readings that they work within the pattern of your solar-lunar nature;
never against it. The synthesis of your horoscope from the following series of paragraphs to a
working unit depends on your keeping this in mind, which will enable you to weld all the readings
into a unified and significant whole.
Sun in Leo and Moon in Pisces
You know when to fight and when to run away. A combination of aggression and recession,
accurately timed to suit the needs of the world, brings you success. You are no coward in any sense
of the word; but you understand the value of material expediency, though in moral issues you will
not give an inch. You will go down with the sinking ship of Truth if necessary; but you will not be
caught short in the market or play your luck past its reasonable limit. Thus you are a good business
man with a large strain of humanitarianism, so that you are able to be successful without becoming
hard-boiled. You take care of the people who are dependent on you, having a true feeling for
noblesse oblige. You are a philanthropist. You have a keen sense of sorrow and tragedy, and under
your bubbling and vigorous exterior you preserve a sort of brooding, philosophic spirit that is well
aware of the sadness of life. Being a person of action, you are not content to let this remain merely

dejection; you will do something about it in your own way - trying to reform the world through
philosophy, donations, social work, political influence - but always animated by the broad motive.
Your ambition for influence is for the good you can do rather than for personal glory; for with great
self-respect, you combine a true humility of spirit and a real love for your fellow man. You are
ardent in love but not constant; the expansive spirit here is likely to seek more than one person to
whom to express love. But a certain idealism takes this out of the realm of philandering. You're too
serious a person to be called fickle, though what you do may amount to the same thing. Whatever
you do, your motives are of the highest; and if you hurt people, it is only to regret it bitterly, and
perhaps in tears, later.
You will have a hectic love life. You must resist a temptation to withdraw into a cell of your
own building, and to allow your seriousness to degenerate into dejection and depression. Allow
your energies to have active outlet, and your idealism and magnetism will carry you far.
Sun
The Sun indicates the appearance you will present before the world and the psychological bias
which will dominate your actions. What you seem, and why, are told in the reading for your Sun. In
many ways the Sun is the dominant force in your horoscope and in your life. Other influences,
especially that of the Moon, may modify the Sun's influence, but nothing will cause you to depart
very far from the basic solar pattern. For this reason a whole literature and a whole business have
grown up around Sun-sign astrology; and many people exist who think there is nothing more to the
horoscope than knowing what "sign you were born in" and what the Sun in that sign means. This is
a mistake, as you will discover when you have read the influence of the other bodies. But
throughout your reading, keep in mind always the basic influence of the Sun, and remember that all
other influences must be interpreted in terms of it, especially in so far as other influences play a
visible role in your life. You may think, dream, imagine, hope to be a thousand things, according to
your Moon and your other planets, but the Sun is what you are, and to be your best self in terms of
your Sun is to cause your energies to work along the path in which they will have maximum help
from planetary vibrations.

The mainspring of Leo's great energy, vitality and charm is his instinctive desire for both public
acclaim and self-approval. Of all the signs, Leo is perhaps the most aware of himself; in a sense he
is always before the looking glass, seeing what effect he is making. In shallow types this makes for
mere vanity, pompousness, pride. Add profundity, and all this is changed. Your best Leo type is
earnest, sincere, eager to please himself and the world around him and willing, in order to do so, to
take on infinite work and go to infinite trouble. He is not genuinely introspective; he has little
capacity to discover his inner faults; but he is very sensitive to the effect he makes on others, and
studies therefore what to do to make a better effect. There is a difference here from self-analysis to
improve character from the inside, but the difference is in method rather than in result.
For Leo, in the process of appearing something desirable, actually becomes something
desirable. He knows instinctively the wisdom of the advice Hamlet gave his mother: "Assume a
virtue if you have it not". By assuming the appearance of a virtue for the sake of winning approval,
he actually acquires the virtue itself, for he is the soul of truth and cannot behave as he doesn't feel.
He thus removes the curse from his play acting, for his sense of the dramatic is strong, and the roles
he assumes are noble. This would be unbearable if in the process Leo did not actually become
noble - but he does; some of the greatest spirits who have ever walked the earth are these very Leos
who chose for themselves a high role in which to merit the world's approval, lived up to the role,
and actually became what they wanted to be admired for. "Such a price do the gods exact for a
song, to become what we sing." Whether he is found in business, on the stage (and he often is), or
in a love affair (where also he often is), Leo is acutely aware of himself, always standing off and
appraising the effect he is making. He will usually be found, if not conventional, at least discreet.
Self-approval replaces conscience; he'll do anything if he thinks it is right, and will brave public
opinion if his self-approval is sufficiently important to outweigh the loss of public approval.
However he behaves, you can rest assured that he is always acutely aware of what people are
thinking of him and that he is striving to make them think as well as possible.
Following are the aspects to your Sun. In a general way, the trines and sextiles to your Sun
make ease, contentment, happiness, luck; while squares and oppositions give you energy, drive,
success, ambition. Conjunctions bring both energy and luck, and are translatable in terms of
whether the Sun receives squares or trines, along with the conjunction. Similarly, squares and trines
to the Sun together bring success through work and perseverance, and luck develops in proportion
to the work done and the effort extended. Your luck, energy, and direction work well together, and
accomplishment is easy and fluent. Your progress is rapid and satisfying.
Sun Conjunct Venus Orb: 03°26'
You are popular, a favorite with the other sex, with a robust magnetism and fire to your
personality that comes from high good spirits, and a sort of all-pervading optimism and good
fellowship. In a woman's horoscope this will give you more than your share of admirers, and they
will have good financial and social backgrounds; girls with this position generally marry above
their station without sacrificing love. Women under this aspect frequently trip to the altar with the
boss or his son. In a man's horoscope you are a favorite with women, lucky in love and in other

things too; loyal, devoted, and ardent, the prototype of the Great Lover. Idealism lends a curious
glamour to your appearance, for you are easy to look at, and your idealism sticks out all over you,
throwing a kind of magnetic aura around you. It's sex appeal but also something more idealistic
than that - the appeal of a Janet Gaynor rather than of a Mae West. You love nice things and have
an exquisite, as well as a lavish, taste. In both emotional and material matters this is a highly
intensifying influence and will heighten and tend to improve any other aspects to the Sun or to
Venus.
Sun Conjunct Mars Orb: 04°44'
Little boys and girls with this aspect are generally known as "fresh kids" and more likely than
not they never get over it. You are marked by a certain audacity - you speak out your mind at the
drop of a hat - and not very tactfully either. You don't know the meaning of the word fear, either in
a physical or a mental sense. You will attack a roaring lion bare-handed, or endeavor to debate a
legal point with a Supreme Court justice - all with the same aggressive assurance in your own
ability. This is admirable, but it isn't always good sense. You come in for a good many trimmings
both verbal and otherwise, through an unwise selection of opponents, and throughout life you have
to be careful of trying to push over stone walls with your head. You're the kid who wouldn't holler

the dangers of your aggressiveness are much moderated, and self-confidence and courage bring
success through your own efforts. In any case, you will have to curb aggressiveness which can
range from mere cockiness to downright ego mania. You have abundant energies both mental and
physical. It is too bad if your abilities are lost through antagonism, or your powers dissipated in
temper. Self-control should be your constant aim in both personal and business matters and you
should remember when you are tempted to do or say something bold that "fools rush in where
angels fear to tread." Your vigorous personality and quick mind will carry you far when you have
learned to overcome the quirks of your own nature. In a woman's horoscope this generally brings
trouble through men. If you marry a girl with this aspect prepare to let her rule the roost.
Sun Trine Saturn Orb: 03°02'
You are lucky, coming of good stock and being born into a favorable environment. Elders have
done a good deal for you, and no matter how poor your parents may have been or how rich, they
have seen to it that responsibility was removed from you as much as possible and that the hardships
of life did not touch you. (But with your Moon square Saturn you assumed a good deal of
responsibility early and carried it well.) You have a good sound body and mind. You are serious
without being dejected or depressed, and are capable of concentrated effort. You enjoy a large
element of luck. Doors open to you, opportunities come, or you create them. The tendency of this
aspect is to smugness and self-satisfaction, pride and relaxation of ambition and energies, so that,
despite a sound mind in a sound body, you don't seem to get very far. You have lots of luck with
very little effort; maximum return for minimum work, and material security.
Sun Trine Uranus Orb: 05°18'
One of the indexes of long life, a strong physical heredity, and vitality. In addition to these
physical qualities, you have a progressive mental outlook, strongly tinged with originality, and any
plans that you organize will be pushed through with a certain dash and comprehension of total

results that knits the parts together strongly. Organization, either of undertakings or of knowledge,
is your strong point. You see things in the large rather than the particular. This position makes you
a leader of thought and action. Your originality is not tinged with the bizarre, but has a wholesome
practical quality about it. You are a very expansive person, looking at things in the large. You'll
indulge in large independent ventures which will succeed or fail according to the other indications
of the horoscope. You build strongly and forever. You always build on the grand scale, and in the
grand manner, for a certain magnanimity of approach and magnificence of outlook characterizes
you.
Moon
While the Sun's position by sign determines what motives and urges dominate your life as it
meets the naked eye, the sign position of the Moon tells the desire of your heart which may or may
not be expressed or realized in your life. When you "know what you mean but you can't say it," it is
your Moon that knows it and your Sun that can't say it. "Thoughts that do often lie too deep for
tears" are the thoughts of your Moon's nature. The wordless ecstasy, the mute sorrow, the secret
dream, the esoteric picture of yourself that you can't get across to the world, or which the world
doesn't comprehend or value - these are the products of the Moon in your horoscope. When you are
misunderstood, it is your Moon nature, expressed imperfectly through the Sun sign, that you feel is
betrayed. When you know what you ought to do, but can't find the right way to do it, it is your
Moon that knows and your Sun that refuses to react in harmony. Also, when you "don't know why I
said that," it was your Moon expressing despite your Sun (if you are innerly satisfied with the
involuntary speech), or the Sun expressing against the will of the Moon (if you are displeased with
what has slipped out). Things you know without thought - intuitions, hunches, instincts - are the
products of the Moon. Modes of expression that you feel are truly your deepest self belong to the
Moon: art, letters, creative work of any kind; sometimes love; sometimes business. Whatever you
feel is most deeply yourself, whether or not you are able to do anything about it in the outer world,
is the product of your Moon and of the sign your Moon occupies at birth.
Moon in Pisces
To achieve wisdom, to dwell in the high secluded valley of Shangri-la, to know yourself and
your relation to the universe, to be in tune with the infinite, and to be recognized as a person of
understanding: these are the constant aims of your life, in the fulfillment of which you satisfy most
truly your esoteric picture of yourself. If you want material things, it is so that your study and
contemplation may be comfortable, untroubled by worry over security; and if material things are
hard to get, you are capable of achieving a philosophy that makes them unnecessary to your
contentment and self-development, which is always the kernel of your nut of life. On the other
hand, if material things come easily, if circumstances and your total personality conspire to start
you on an upward spiral toward success, your inner nature will tell you that success and luxury are,
for some deep spiritual reason, your due; and the comfort they bring your spirit may lend you
power in getting more and more of them. In no case, however, are material concerns of first import
to your deepest and truest self, whose search is always for self-knowledge, self-understanding and
self-fulfillment in the intangible sense that depends on nothing outside of you. You are unhappy
only when you violate, in action, thought, word, some truth that is essential to you, or when you
realize you have acted counter to the dictates of your own self-taught wisdom. Too continuous

violation of your own code causes brooding and deep unhappiness, and thus your only sure path to
contentment, which is your success, is to make sure that you adhere always to the wisdom already
acquired, and build stone by stone toward that high pyramid of wisdom in the completion of which
is your success.
Following are the aspects to your Moon. Look to the trines and sextiles to give you charm and
clear-thinking; and to the squares and oppositions to provide you with concentration and driving
force.
Moon Sextile Jupiter Orb: 07°17'
You are idealistic, humanitarian, and expansive in your outlook, animated by genuine charity,
and probably in a position to make it practical. You are cheerful, optimistic, good-humored, and
tactful. Courtesy is innate in you - one of nature's gentlefolk. You have excellent family
connections especially on your mother's side, and probably some financial help from them in gifts
or legacies. Necessity has never taught you to be careful of money, which you more or less take for
granted. If put to it, your earning powers are good, for friends put you in the way of earning.
Character is your strong point: you have a keen sense of right and wrong. Your ideas run along
conventional lines; you belong to the conservative, right-wing, pillar-of-society group, believing in
noblesse oblige rather than in socialism. You are devotional and probably religious in an orthodox
sense, but the pillar of your religion is the god in you - that is, character - rather than metaphysics
and dogma.
Moon Square Saturn Orb: 07°43'
This is perhaps the most powerful single aspect you can have in a horoscope. It gives both
ambition and the ability to concentrate on it. You are serious-minded, at times changing to moody,
depressed, and dejected; but as you grow older an early tendency to fall into the doldrums gradually
disappears as your mind becomes organized into a smooth-running unit driving always toward a
well-defined goal. Whatever your physical energy may or may not be, your mental and psychic
energy is high and well directed. You do not waste yourself in profitless ventures or very much in
nerves, anger, or displays of temperament; these belonged to your early years, and you learned as
you grew older the futility and waste which such displays involve. Your greatest asset is your
ability to learn by experience, for though you have made many, and probably great, mistakes, your
self-knowledge is your salvation. At the bottom of the pit of depression or despair or error, you are
able to look yourself squarely in the face and start building your way back to where you want to be.
You have an inner drive and a sense of your own worth amounting almost to a neurosis, which you
are able to express on the constructive side. Psychologically this marks you as somehow
extraordinarily influenced by one or both parents. Thus, in whatever field you choose to operate -
business, the professions, or the arts - you have the jump on competitors who are not assisted by the
mental energy and the psychological drive of this aspect. Although determined and apparently
ardent in emotional matters, you are capable of being pretty cold when it suits your purposes.
Nothing personal is allowed to interfere with the main stream of your intentions once youth is past
and your purposes are set. Prior to this, in youth, this aspect gives a hectic emotional life, and you

may be the despair of yourself and your friends and relatives. Through excessive independence you
hurt your parents; through erratic action, your sweethearts. But as you mature, these temperamental
qualities fall away. What has happened goes deeply into your consciousness; and your fund of
experience, falling under the scrutiny of an analytical mentality, contributes to that knowledge of
the world, of people, and of yourself which becomes the cornerstone of your success. The power of
this aspect is so great that with any encouragement from any other aspect, it will produce success
along some line or other. Its genius varies according to other indications. You have genius in
business. Your genius lies in the military, government, or political arena. Your genius is creative,
dramatic, or poetic. Your success lies in legal or judicial matters.
