Planet Aspects
The Lights: The Sun and Moon
At the time of our birth, the planets (through their configurations and relationships) tell us
something about how things were when we were born. Each planet points to special qualities
within us. Yet, of all the planets, the two most important planets to astrologers are the "lights,"
the Sun and the Moon. From where we stand here on Earth, the great shining Sun by day and
the reflecting Moon at night are our constant companions. They have much to tell us as to
where we have been and where we are headed.
The Sun: Your Self and Future
From the Sun comes light, that which draws us into life. The Sun represents all the changes
we have not yet taken, that part of us that we have not yet experienced but are headed toward.
The Sun represents our identity, or self, in that it is toward these that we are moving and
developing. Thus, it also represents that which we will become: older people, authorities --
those we look toward, or up to. Our essence, or future. Teachers, gurus, and older (more

The Outer Planets
In the previous sections, we have dealt with planets that we can see with our naked eyes. In
general, these planets refer to life as we know and live it and are the so-called historical or
classic planets. Beyond these are three planets that are not visible in the sky and which have
cycles longer than the average human life span. Since they are beyond Saturn or time,
astrologers call them the trans-personal or transcendental planets -- the planets beyond the
physical. One of the ways astrologers learn something about our life beyond time (eternal life)
is through these three outer planets: Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. Here we find information on
how we discover ourselves (Uranus), how we understand and accept these discoveries
(Neptune), and, in time, how we depend and identify with them (Pluto).
Uranus: Break-Thrus & Insights
Our responsibilities can tend to weigh us down, and we each have our particular ways of
getting around (or breaking through) the mass of obstructions that tends to congeal around us.
The planet that has to do with how we get beyond the difficulties and problems life presents us
is Uranus. Here is the way insights come to us, how we discover or come to know and
understand ourselves. It has to do with finding new uses for old things, and it rules inventions
and sudden insights into our life -- everything that is unusual, eccentric, and out of the ordinary.
It is the reverse of the status quo and is always unconventional and heretical. Uranus is, in many

poet wrote) letting "the dewdrop slip into the shining sea." These moments and this state of

Fourth House: Home, Family, Security
The fourth house is where we send down roots, find our limits, and generally secure
ourselves. It is the end of any searching we might have done in the third house. Here we find or
end our search, settle down, and manage to get in possession of the whole situation. This is our
home and the base from which we can work, feel, and experience. This is the root of our
experience, the core or thick of it.
Fourth House
Pisces energy runs deep and toward the psychological -- whatever is beneath the surface.
This sign is understanding, patient, and long-suffering. Pisces tend to absorb all the little barbs
and digs coming from outside. They always have their mind on an inner goal, something more
important. They are very forgiving and accepting -- giving of themselves for the sake of more

since we begin to recognize and own our experience. We know that we have had or are having
an experience. All forms of expression and offspring are connected to this house -- children,
animals, creative expression, and so on. A sense of direction and ownership takes hold at this
point in our experience.

Aries is the sign of the pioneer and leader. It is always impulsive, concentrated, and
spontaneous. Act first and think about what you have done later. Rushing in where others fear
to tread, the Aries energy is attention-getting. It always provokes a response from the
surroundings, from others. There is something essential and instigative that starts or causes

Fire:
This element concerns inspiration and change, and lots of it makes for
good orators, preachers, singers, motivators, or anything that sets
people on fire and elevates the spirit. Lack of the element may leave
the native unmoved by the usual hype but also not easily stirred when
aspiring to be, as in spiritual quests.
Earth:
This lends solidity and reliability to a chart, keeps your feet on the
ground. A total lack of earth makes for a people who can be extreme
risk takers because they don't really know better. They go where
angels fear to tread, and those same angels bear them up lest they
dash their foot upon a stone -- on a really good day, that is.
Air:
This enables thought and communication, the intellectual side of things.
A lot of air makes for a rather cerebral type, whereas lack of air means
that explaining things may be meaningless. Results, not talk, gut-level
or emotional evaluation may take precedence over logic and careful,
explainable planning.
Water:
This is all about the ability to sense and communicate feelings, and lots
of water makes for emotional types. Lack of water tends to lead to
emotional cluelessness, a problem of not being about to pick up the
usual social cues and unconscious gestures, leading to embarrassment
or faux pas without intending or expecting it.

Cardinal:
Lots of this makes for a very assertive personality, someone who steps
into the breach even if, perhaps, there isn't one. It's great for situations
where independence is a virtue and occasional toe-stepping is not
taken too severely. None at all tends to make for a more retrenched
personality, or one who opts for multiple choice and nuances, not the
first solution that comes to hand.
Fixed:
Lots of this makes people, well, fixed. They take a stance and stand by
it, right or wrong. They make staunch friends, determined fools, but
sometimes repeat themselves too much and have a hard time
recognizing or accepting change. Lack of it makes for a dearth of
follow-through and dependability, inability to stay the course.
Mutable:
Lots of this makes for tremendous flexibility, the ability to take all sides
of an issue and skillfully switch horses in mid-stream. It's all about
nuance and how quickly the multiple elements of a situation change
their qualities. Lack of it tends to make for lack of diplomacy or even an
understanding of the need for it – sometimes lack of manners, simply
for being unable to understand what kind applies to the situation.

Angular:
Planets here are considered stronger, and lots of angularity makes for a
more immediate, forceful presence. None at all tends to create
wallflowers, or at least those who don't jump for the first dance.
Succedent:
Planets here are considered more durable but slower to manifest, and
lots of them make for greater long-term vision and action. Lack of it
leans toward haste or hesitation, people who are on the leading or
trailing edges of the action but not really at the heart of it.
Cadent:
Planets here are traditionally thought to be weaker, or at least less
active compared to other places, and they tend to manifest later rather
than sooner. It's great for fence-sitting and avoiding ill-fated
bandwagons by never actually getting on one or at least getting off fast.
A lack here makes for less flexibility and a certain inability to cover your
back.

Introduction
Grant Lewi (1902 - 1951) is a legendary figure among twentieth century astrologers. He was a
writer and editor for the two largest astrological magazines of the time. His two books, Heaven
Knows What and Astrology for the Millions , were the first astrological books to become best
sellers and even today, over fifty years later, they remain among the best introductions to the
subject of astrology.
The astrological interpretations found in Heaven Knows What and Astrology for the Millions
were unique, fresh, and simple. Llewellyn George, the prominent astrologer of the time, remarked
that Lewi's interpretations must be intuitive because they were unlike any that had been written
before him. Today these interpretations remain energetic and forceful and, though some references
are now dated, Lewi's text still provides some of the clearest insights found anywhere in the
literature of astrology.
Lewi was determined to make astrology more accessible to the average person, but while
popularizing the subject he never watered it down or reduced it to the level found in "sun sign"
astrology. Writing before computers were available, he made his books function as the computer,
providing the reader with tables to generate their own charts or horoscopes and then linking his
interpretations to the information found there. Lewi would have made good use of the computer, so
much in his books seem to anticipate them. In his writing he tried to emulate the interpretation
process by using a computerless version of artificial intelligence: the meaning of a planet in a sign
doesn't stand alone but is modified by the other aspects found in your chart. Many of his comments
depend on a combination of factors and for this reason you will sometimes find that he has
something different to say about an aspect in your chart than he does for the same aspect in your
friend's chart.
This report calculates your chart for you and then collects all of Lewi's comments strictly
according to the astrological factors found there. The text contained here is valid even for those
who don't know their time of birth - Lewi focused on those factors that are in effect throughout the
birthday. The only exception to this is the case of the Moon which can move between 12 and 14
degrees in a day, so if the positions were calculated for noon then the Moon could be as much as 6
or 7 degrees different and possibly even change signs. If you don't know your time and the texts
that involve the Moon seem unlikely, you may wish to compare reports done for the beginning and
the end of the day.
At all times, Lewi’s aim has been to show how astrology can be used as an aid in living a more
satisfying and fulfilling life. Astrology offers indications and pointers - and sometimes insights - to
situations that you find in life. It doesn’t tell you what to do about them, but if it offers you a better
understanding of the situation, then you are in a better position to decide for yourself what to do. To
quote Grant Lewi:
"It is not limitations that eats out the heart, but inaction, the knowledge of powers not used, the
sense of having failed to develop to the utmost. The overcoming of fate is not the overcoming of

limitations: that is impossible. It is the exercise of free will, the assertion of the full self, expanding
to its utmost with the tools at hand, in the circumstances that are set. Astrology, through the
interpretation of the horoscope, assists men to the achievement of their maximum by indicating to
them the lines along which their will may be most progressively applied, the goals to be sought,
and the individual means by which each one may arrive at the outermost boundaries of his world."
Horoscope of Birth
Your horoscope of birth is the blueprint of your personality and character as indicated by the
position of the Sun, the Moon and the eight planets on the date of your birth. This section is
devoted to each of these members of the solar system.
The planets are the antennae and arms of the horoscope, of which the body and soul are the Sun
and Moon. No planet will ever cause you to act counter to the testimony of the Sun and Moon in
their combined influence on you. Remember this when you proceed with the following readings.
All planetary vibration must be considered in light of the basic solar-lunar readings, for these are
your character, your basic nature, which the planets will help or hinder but cannot materially
change.
According to the sign position of your Sun, one planet will be more important than the others
and should probably be read first. Your Sun is in Taurus and your dominant planet is Venus. Not
only the action of this ruling planet will be very important in your life, but also the attribute over
which it rules. Thus Gemini, ruled by Mercury, lives a great deal in the senses; Libra, ruled by
Venus, responds most readily to emotional stimuli; and so on. Study your ruler carefully.
Remember in all planetary readings that they work within the pattern of your solar-lunar nature;
never against it. The synthesis of your horoscope from the following series of paragraphs to a
working unit depends on your keeping this in mind, which will enable you to weld all the readings
into a unified and significant whole.
Sun in Taurus and Moon in Virgo
You have charm, poise, balance, and admirable common sense and the extent to which you
develop these qualities to your own intellectual and economic advantage will depend on other
things.
Your boundless energy, intelligence, and above all common sense, will carry you far, in either
an intellectual or an artistic career. Your executive qualities are not well marked, but in mental
undertakings, or when carrying out the instructions of a superior, you are excellent. Your strong
Taurean independence, however, makes it hard for you to take orders for long, and thus you'll do
best in an independent career that depends neither on giving nor on taking orders - art, letters or
housekeeping.
You have a good intelligence, and though not precocious mentally (your emotions get ahead of

your intellectual development), you learn steadily and keep it up for a long time, once you start.
You will always be reading, studying, and absorbing what other people have to give you.
And above all you have grace and charm of manner, especially pleasant in a woman's
horoscope. You're sure to be popular with both men and women. This position gives a fine intellect,
and brings success in a career that depends on this gift. The chief danger is that general good luck
and protection from worry will swamp its possibilities for development, for an inclination to relax
and go to sleep intellectually is very strong, especially when the emotional wants (which are very
strong) are satisfied. A little adversity is good for you and tends to wake you up, for you are
extremely conscientious and will not fall down on a job when it's put up to you. Aspects like your
Moon square Saturn, Moon square Mars, and Mars opposite Saturn, though they bring you
hardships and disappointments and hurts, are really blessings in disguise since they stimulate you,
open your eyes, and set a pace for you to follow.

The singleness of purpose of the Taurean, his loyalty, his stick-to-it-iveness,
spring from one source: his need for security. Self-preservation, the first law animating all assure in
some degree, is the hub of the Taurean wheel of life; and the Taurean curls and dies within himself

dates shown only represent the times when the aspect is exact; its influence is felt for weeks,
months, and sometimes even years around this time. A planet will often make the same aspect
several times in one year before it leaves that area of the zodiac and moves on. This is due to the
planet appearing to go backward or retrograde for a period of time and crossing and recrossing the

How long any aspect will be in effect is determined by the speed of the planet making the

one-half years and so a Mars aspect will last about 20 to 30 days. Jupiter takes about 12 years for
its cycle and so its aspects could last around 4 months, while Saturn with a 29 year cycle will last 9
