the relationship ended (or at least im pretty sure it has ended) in a very bitter and sour and catastrophic manner after a few months of strains (the strains began just as venus began its retro-shadow period in november).

i read over and over again that planet aspects to the south node are usually unhealthy. with my moon conjunct my own south node, how can i ever have a healthy relationship with someone if my moon craves contact, but with it will always be that south node being contacted too?

i havent had a healthy relationship since high school (im 29).

In the psychological perspective, South Node shows where we come from, the place we have been and are familiar with but is supposed to overcome the negative side of it in order to go to our North Node. But moving on from the past doesn't mean forgetting about it, but just overcoming the negative traits of it. Think about it, if we forget about the past then what's the point of having it? Our past shapes us who we are, it's the sum of the lessons from our experiences. And with our past, we are supposed to retain thr good while overcoming the bad.
So South Node contacts might give a sense of familiarity, since the South Node is part of what the South Node person is, and it resonates with the energy of the planet person. Now for this synastry aspect to be good or bad depends on how the South Node person is with his or her South Node side, and how the planet energy of the other person manifests. If the planet person manifests the planet negatively, then it might remind the South Node person of the negative sides of the South Node that the Node person is supposed to overcome. If the planet energy manifests positively, then it reminds the Node person of the good sides of the South Node that the Node person is familiar with. Also, if the South Node person is not mature enough, he or she might be stuck in the South Node side rather than moving on to the North Node, but if the Node person is mature, he or she will just feel a sense of familiarity but won't be stuck.

what is your overall opinion on the synastry? im not sure how to read it - i realize that every relationship will have its strengths and weaknesses, eases and tensions. do you think this relationship could make it if we patched things up, or does it seem more like something that's better let go of?

I can see a Grand Trine, and about four Oppositions.

Saturn Opposite the Moon and Pluto Opposite the Moon would alarm me.

However, you do have a South Node Sun/Moon.
