Just venting really-Pisces with moon in Cancer and Taurus rising is being evicted from her apartment in sunny Sydney for no reason. We’re dream tenants and true to Merc in retro, every negotiation has been met with a “no”. We’ve even offered up to an extra $60 per week rent. Ours was the oldest kitchen in the block all owned by the one owner and we went to the tribunal to protest at the last rental increase that it was excessive due to the state of the kitchen. We were also broke. This latest rental increase despite being more “flush” and happy to pay, we’re being turfed. -and the only ones in the building too. No grounds. They are simply going to renovate and charge an extra $150 per week. 4 emails, a phone message and a text have had no effect. We got the most resounding “no” so far on the 19th-thankyou Saturn.-Funny how it’s all syncing in.. So we’ve written a letter directly to the owner. Cross your fingers for us-We don’t deserve this-myself and 67 yr old Cancerian hubby are decent people always being involved in the arts so we haven’t got a cent-we simply can’t afford to buy in Sydney. I feed the birds on my windowsill, rescue moths and spiders in the shower and we both cry watching old movies. We need a break!

I really wish I knew more about law in Australia. Sometimes you can delay on technicality. Is the zoning proper for the renovation? Is there a rent control law in that zone? Did they give proper notice in the first place?
Is the new lease considered "reasonable"?

All I can offer is a few tarot spreads.

Will she be able to negotiate and stay in the apartment?
-3 of Swords crowning means a headache and dealing with a lot of people. Hermit in the near future tells me try won't move so fast. 8 of Cups tells me they expect you to JUST GO. Final outcome is Page of Coins. That's a good sign for negotiation, but with Ace of Coins in the past, I doubt you'll have to pay what they were initially asking.

Will she have at least til spring to negotiate?
-this will happen before Spring (April)

It looks favorable. May have to put your poker face on. They expect you to cave and move. I think they will take an offer if you stick it out.

Wow-just joined and I'm getting a nice warm and fuzzy feeling. Thankyou to all-

In Oz, once a set lease has expired you go on to a month by month lease, a situation which can go on for years until you leave or they ask you to go. If there are grounds they can ask you to leave giving 30 days. If there are no grounds but owner is selling, you get 60. No grounds at all and you get 90-which is OK I suppose. It's so expensive here. Where my husband and I are, (as we need to be close to work), a two bedder is going for upwards of $500. And many places are old and unkept. No rent control here..I've bowed and scraped and sent a letter to the owner direct and we're waiting to hear back, but up til now, I have had the distinct uneasy feeling the realtor wants us out and has given the owner an unfavourable impression of us-hence I suspect she hasn't passed on any of our offers. The last offer was $70 per week over what we're paying. She would have to be the worst realtor I've ever dealt with and I've been renting for over 30 years. Good to know you think there's a chance..A neighbour in the building has offered for us to stay with her if we suggest to the owner that if they want to renovate, we can continue paying rent (which we're not obliged to do,) move in with my friend in flat 9, and then resume at an increased rental rate once the reno's are completed. It would the owner lost rental revenue, re-letting fees and advertising fees.I haven't proposed that yet, that's next. We are the only ones being turfed out-we're friends with just about everyone in the building barring the "newies" but I even think they think we're innocuous and decent. No-one can understand it. The only thing I think it can be is that we went to what they call the rental tribunal here to protest at the last increase and the owner probably thinks they really should renovate the kitchen but why give these trouble makers a chance so turf 'em. Up til now tho, they've waited until the tenant has voluntarily given notice before going in. This is different and I'm worried for everyone else in the building as well as I think a precedent is being set. I don't like it at all. Glad to know-it's a nice feeling-that people I've never met are sending me good vibes. It is humbly appreciated. Thankyou.

My cards are saying not to offer a penny more.
They show assessment, but 6 of Cups outcome. If you feel the landlord isn't getting your offers, go direct to the property owner. In America, we can ho to Hall of Records and request a copy of the deed, which will show the owner's name and address. If the address showing is the property address, I would address the letter to the landlord's name and mail it anyway (without a return address) hoping that (s)he will collect the letter eventually and read it.

I would not offer a penny more. My cards say it's not necessary. I really wish the best of luck

Here you pay $9 to the ASIC website to get the owner's company details/postal address which I did last week. The letter direct to the owner went off on Thursday so it's in the next two days I will hear of any news. Maybe today.

At such a crossroads right now-at least my man and I are using this impetus to really wonder when we are going to just go ahead and start this alternate/gypsy/country life we've always wanted..maybe not now, but at least we're facing possibilities full-on..It's ghoulish I know, but I'm an only child and I can't leave my mother alone in Sydney and take off to NZ where we want to go until she passes. I need to be here for her-she's 89 this year and it will be too cruel to leave her as she will have no-one. When she goes, we will sell the house so that's a bit of security at least-unless she has to go into a home in which case, we won't get much at all. The house should be condemned so there won't be much but it will buy something passable in the middle of nowhere in the south island. Then my husband-who is 67 can actually retire.
He will paint and I will tend the chooks, make home-made bread and plant a veggie patch. Or we will buy a motorhome, grow tomatoes on the window sill and mushrooms under the sink and just **** off! Can't afford a bean until then.

Ya gotta dream! Thanks everyone for your encouragement. I will keep you posted!

Well, update: No response after I sent the letter to the owners last Thursday. It's now a week later. I think the owner just doesn't care. Over here, renters are the lowest form of life. You'd think they'd put me out of my misery, wouldn't you! I know we should regard possessions more dispassionately, but I have a Pisces sun, Cancer moon in my second house and Taurus rising. I know I shouldn't be this emotional but I'm walking around with a pain in my gut the whole time. I am trying to stay distracted, but I'm 48, this is who I am and it's not going to change anytime soon. Heading off to NZ for a long weekend-hope there's good news when we get back. Will keep you posted.
