Youthful innocence (Meng) high above is the motionless mountain, and down below the foaming and turbulent brook appears.

The destruction of the past (po) : the solid, bare mountain is like the roof on the earth.

These are all the people who, for better and for worse, showed him the narrow path through the material world. He carries a heavy burden of conflicts to be settled. His sacrifices to bring about unity must have been considerable.

The king reconciles himself with all those he has hurt, betrayed or deserted along the way. He also thanks those who have hurt, betrayed or deserted him. From the past, he has finally reached this point. The achieved unity is perfect. The road to heaven and earth lies open. That is why any movement is favourable.

The process of letting go of the past is evident in the intersection between heaven and earth, which takes place in the here and now. This can be observed in any natural phenomenon. No other living being but man is so conscious of the past.

The wise man will not let his "weapons" for battle rust and will always be prepared for the unexpected.
