I get that his feelings truly are ones purely of friendship. He admires who she is as a person and he finds her physically attractive, so I think they may have explored the possibility at one time of a 'relationship', but there's an absence of 'spark' there for him which he seems to have clearly identified and which he needs. So they are just friends.

While her feelings for him were a bit more intense, she seems to be a young woman of character and self-respect who wouldn't press boundaries once they're laid out, so chances of her angling for 'more' feel non-existent.
