Thanks Tinkerbug.
When I was a very small child, I lived on-and-off with my Libra grandmother who (humor) thought she was Skyping with the persons on the television set. (1950s-60s)
When Lawrence Welk would speak, she'd make all the correct social smiling and agreeing expressions on her face, nodding as though he could 'see' her. She'd have fixed her hair and applied rouge to her cheeks. Took her apron off before entering the TV room. Smooth her dress. She thought 'he' was "company." awwww
Actually?.. I think it sorta scared me.
By the time I reached first grade, our teacher had made big walk-in "TV" cabinet out of a huge box. Made a cut-out where the "TV personality" {one of us} would stand and do our broadcast to the audience {fellow classmates}.
We each had to take a turn going into the box, and act out being the TV personality.
Clear as day, I still remember the electrifying sense of freeze-go. I perched there, not wanting to go further into the box.
.. Maybe I thought Romper Room lady was still invisibly stuck in there somehow???
So.. Romper Room in the 80s you say?
That show ran a LONGGGG time.
I think Sesame Street and Mr Roger's Neighborhood were among some of the shows that came along to provide children with good content.
Them, and this blonde-ponytailed cowgirl named "Sally Starr" …
my oh my!!!
