What do you think/feel about the current trend of these programs that are designed to put the participants under psychological pressure - to see how they react??

So far here in England we've had Big Brother, Survivor and now this week we have "I'm a Celebrity...Get me out of here!"

The celebrities are obviously donating their winnings to charity.
However, I do wonder as to their reasoning as to why they would really want to do this.
By "doing this" I don't mean the raising money for charity, because that is very admirable but they could raise money in other ways.

These celebs have been "plonked" in the jungle and have to survive.
Each day one of them is "the leader" for that day and also one of them
has to do a "task" in order to win meals for them to eat that day! (The tasks are quite horrific and very psychologically challenging for whoever is voted to do them) If they don't do the task - they don't get any food that day...

I really am amazed as to why they would even consider doing this (even
though yes it's for charity)......
Currently they are just make complete idiots of themselves and do not come over as
being particularly nice/bright/intellegent............
The arguments they have been having are extremely childish. Their tolerance
level of each other appears to be totally zero. 3 of them are now totally refusing to speak to each other....for ever........how ridiculous is that! One guy said to one of the women - if you were a man I'd punch
your lights out........
So like I said ...completely mad!

Do you have this program over there?

What are your thoughts on these types of program. Yes, I do admit they are "entertaining" but in a bizzaire way. What's making the producers make this type of program, why are the public so interested in watching them and why do people want to participate in them?

I don't know.

Reality programs have me completely stumped. I think I've watched two or three episodes of Survivor total. Of course, I don't have a tv.

I think Tv has in general just gotten nastier of late. More guns, more violence, more blood, more car wrecks. Look at WWE and WWF, RAW Is WAR? Smackdown? No MERCY? Soooo one of the most popular entertainment choices out there takes pride in being a mindless, violent, and featuring only one woman with real **** ? I hate WWF wrestling I think its dumb. My brother was silver medalist ontario middle weight in wrestling one year, Real wrestling is a skilled sport, what WWE does is sickening.

I've found the only solution is to turn the tv off, and in my case give it away. Its just sad.

Hey Cat,

It's a huge trend in America right now! I know it's a lot of crap! Like for instance Dog eat Dog, Fear Factor, Survivor, Real World, all these silly reality shows, it's sick. But don't lose hope on television these things fade away!! Once every 2 or 4 years a great show comes a long!

Hey Cat! Yea that is big over here in America too. I can't stand those shows. TO me it's not reality because they know the camara is there, and probably have a certain image they want to put out..
Plus the producers do alot with what they show and don't show to get a certain effect. You are right, I don't understand why people would do some of that stuff! Maybe they crave attention? Or maybe their agents tell them to get them "out there"
I don't know!

That's why I don't watch that shiznet.
There are a few goodins out there, though - although you may have to search through cable to find them.
Whenever I have free time when they're on, I try to catch Six Feet Under and Enterprise. The first may have darker themes, but all in all I find it enjoyable; the second...well, I'm a geek, so I watch Star Trek. Sue me.
Other than that, I only take in the news on a regular basis...and half the time I just stick with The Daily Show (a spoof on news programs), the News Hour with Jim Lehrer (on PBS), or Nightline.
Ignoring a great mass of the mass media is probably the only solution to retaining any semblance of sanity.

Cheers,
Corri

Hi Everyone
Yes I totally agree with you all.
I think this is a very weird trend that TV seems to be going through.
It's like putting people in "a cage" then pushing every conceivable "button" to see how they react emotionally.
