Gahhh! I just read 'Inherit the Wind' today by James Lawrence and Robert E. Lee- best literary work I've read in a very long time! A seriously terrific play. Here's the summary from the back of that book:"The accused was a slight, frightened man who had deliberately broken the law. His trial was a Roman circus. The chief gladiators were the two legal giants of the century. Like two bull elephants locked in mortal combat, they bellowed and roared imprecations and abuse. The spectators sat uneasily in the sweltering heat with murder in their hearts, barely able to restrain themselves.
At stake was the freedom of every American."
It's basically a play on a legal clash in the early 20th century between Bible-belters and agnostics. I really, really highly recommend it- and if it isn't already, it should definitly be required reading in schools.
