My Favorite. http://www.amazon.com/Salvatores-Spider-Queen-Complete-Editions/dp/B000PMBC8M/ref=sr_1_sc_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1339132372&sr=1-2-spell R. A. Salvatore's War of the Spider Queen. Complete Six Volume Set. Sextet of First Editions. (1: Dissolution, 2: Insurrection, 3: Condemnation, 4: Extinction, 5: Annihilation, 6: Resurrection) http://forgottenrealms.wikia.com/wiki/Gromph_Baenre quote: Archmage Gromph Baenre is a drow and the archmage of Menzoberranzan. He is also the master of Sorcere, the arcane school, and the first son of Matron Mother Yvonnel Baenre, which makes him the most powerful male in the city. Gromph wandered for some time and adventured before becoming the "leashed" Archmage of the Council of Eight (the eight ruling houses), according to a decree by Lolth. It is only logical for the Council to keep close watch on the male wizards, who are their only real challengers for power.
http://forgottenrealms.wikia.com/wiki/Lolth quote: Lolth the Queen of Spiders or Queen of the Demonweb Pits, is the goddess of the drow, a chaotic evil deity who revels in chaos. She patterns her life and the lives of her worshipers on a regimen of chaotic acts and the veneration of spiders. The way that new-born spider broods tear each other apart to survive especially appeals to her. She promotes this by encouraging her worshipers to kill their rivals, thus ensuring that they are the strongest of the 'brood'. Her love of chaos often makes her appear mad but the wise see her as a calculating individual who is always several steps ahead of those who believe that they can anticipate her. She is cruel and domineering, forcing her will upon her followers and her enemies, a will which instructs the strong to crush the weak in the most torturous way imaginable.

I haven't read this series. I've read some Salvatore and found some of his earlier works ok. But I LOVE Elaine Cunningham, some of her books involving drow and taking place in Menzoberranzan (including Gromph who adopted Liriel in Daughter of the Drow). You might like this fanfic of mine (though if you've never seen Daria you might get confused at times): http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4069424/1/Daria_of_the_Drow Btw, I did another D&D fanfic (The Discord of Harmony) but unless you like the kender of Dragonlance then don't read it. I made it strictly for kender fans and it was inspired by the kender fics on a site devoted to kender but then a virus destroyed the site and since I wrote it I felt I had to put it SOMEWHERE. But it will only appeal to those who love reading about the kender (who preferably understand Planescape and some understanding of the Forgotten Realms, Spelljammer, etc). I've had plenty tell me how much they loved Daria of the Drow but The Discord of Harmony just wasn't for them (and likewise, the couple of really liked DoH didn't care much for DotD, with the notable exception of Roger Moore, formerly of D&D, I'm proud to say who liked both fics). Gromph had two encounters with the undead leader of House Dyrr in this series. quote: Almost two thousand years of age, the creature known as Dyrr is a formidable drow sorcerer who achieved immortality (of a sort) by becoming a lich more than a millennium ago. In his true form, Dyrr is a skeletal creature without a scrap of flesh remaining on his old yellow bones. Emerald flames dance in his empty eye sockets, and his voice is little more than a cold rasp. However, Dyrr prefers to conceal his unliving condition with a variety of illusory guises. Most often, he chooses to take the appearance of an ancient nobleman, a drow of exceptional age who leans on a great staff and wears his years heavily.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lich quote: A Lich, cognate to Dutch lijk and German Leiche, both meaning "corpse", is a type of undead creature. Often such a creature is the result of a transformation, as a powerful magician or king striving for eternal life uses spells or rituals to bind his intellect to his animated corpse and thereby achieve a form of immortality. Liches are depicted as being clearly cadaverous, their bodies desiccated or even completely skeletal.Unlike zombies, which are often depicted as mindless, part of a hivemind and/or under the control of some magician, a lich retains independent thought and is usually at least as intelligent as it was prior to its transformation.
The only thing that saved gromph was the female priest and the things he possessed as part of his position in menzo. The old lich was stronger than him. http://forgottenrealms.wikia.com/wiki/Chaulssin quote: Chaulssin is a drow city in the Underdark. To some people it is also known as the City of Wyrmshadows. Chaulssin lies beneath the northern Rauvin Mountains. It overhangs an extremely deep abyss and cold winds howl permanently through the city. It rests upon a great spar of stone. After it was conquered by shadow dragons and ruled by their descendants the city was partially brought into the Plane of Shadow. Sometimes whole quarters of the city vanish into the Plane of Shadow and reappear years later.
