Hey eveyone - I hope no-one minds that I'm a little too old to be posting here, but I have a question for all you teens....I'm wondering what your opinions are on Body piercing and tattooes....are they an act of rebellion, self expression, or something much deeper and primitive. Some would feel that the act is destructive to one's temple -other's would say it's a rite of passage or an initiation. Piercing and tattooes have been aroung as long as man has - and tribal communities have long adorned themselves with body art and ogmentations.. ...So what do you all think - and do any of you have piercings or tattooes? Ditto Randall!Well, I don't have any "body ornamentation" myself and (to be quite frank) tatoos don't appeal to me in the least. As for piercings, most pierce- locations are fine with me aesthetically, but a few places are something of a turnoff (if you have line of rings stuck thru your tongue, for example, it makes me cringe ). If you have decorated yourself that's fine; all I'm saying is I don't go in for it personally. ------------------ "The only devils in this world are those running around in our own hearts. That is where the battle should be fought"-Gandhi IP: Logged |

Tattoos and piercings seem like fun, I might try a tongue stud someday, some minor things, but I won't go overboard because these things are kind of permanent and, being the Gemini I am, I know I'll get sick of it or outgrow it in short time. So I've decided I'm going to get my sun sign on my behind My sun sign will always be the same, and its in a nice private area.IP: Logged |

So, I guess you'd than say it's just a mode of expression....Hmm....Tuesday, I like you're idea about getting your sign sign tattooed on your rump - indeed a private area I'm quite heavily tattooed, and have several piercings... I enjoy the expression they allow me...A lot of the times I feelthey act like radar - by that I refer to people who are quick to judge and in doing so don't take the time to see beneath apperance......Thanks for your imput Guys!!!!blezzingS Sherbear IP: Logged |

Hey Zerep - Hmmm.....What are your reasons for wanting to decorate your body? I mean I'm all for it, but I wonder what seperates those who "chose" to get tattooed, and those who don't??? It's a vey personal subject-and well I guess everyone has different reasons.......I feel an unmarked body is inarticulate, mute....but when decorated it truly begins to comunicate..(and I've noticed so many more of the youngsters today doing so).....This of course is only my opinion - and I'm not sure old you are, but I know here in Canada you have to 18 in order to get pierced or tattooed..makes sense to me...How would your parent's feel about this? - Honestly my Dad thinks I'm crazy, and that I must be searching for some identity to be doing what I'm doing...(a lot of my tattooes are very large pieces, and take hours upon hours....) ......He's so silly though - and being the wonderful father he is accepts me......I let him know that i feel in order to truly be creative one has to first break free from the "normal" accepted values..cuz what is normal Anyways? - Lots of love to all you little teeny boppers over here in teen spirit - Man, to be 16 again oh, and sorry if I've managed to ramble...... um....? it's not rebellious with me. I just want a tattoo that looks nice & a belly ring just for me I guess, for self esteem I suppose. in france it's 16 the legal age so only a little longer. my parents they don't really mind as long as the place is clean & the tattoo isn't huge. And they don't want me regretting it after.so I've gotta think before I get it.that's all...reallyIP: Logged |

Oh, yes Branding and there's also scarification....Neither form appeals to me - but there's a surprising amount of people who are really into this 'sub culture' .Branding is done with a hot iron in the shape or design desired - while hot it is placed on the skin to create a welt which then leaves a scar.....Scarification can be done in several ways...One with a knife, or blade (depending on the type of line desired) cutting the skin in the desired picture or design..The other method is to cut and remove layers of skin which also leave scars.. Neither of these procedures should ever be attempted by anyone who is not a profesinal.....Oddly enough - the "master" in the business(apparently in North America) has his shop down the street from the shop I work at.....Really great guy....And I understand all precautions are taken when doing any of these procedures......Tools are only used once and than disposed of..Good thing, sometimes it can get bloody...Anyways, hope I did't freak ya's out - just telling ya like it is.....BlezzingS Sher bear IP: Logged |

You guys are so cute... Honestly though, this sort of body modification has been going on all around the world since the dawn of man.. If you get a chance visit your local library - check out primitives, ancient civilizations, or perhaps aborigines of the world....Cultures have been marking the body in the most bizzare ways for ever.(you would be outcast not to be marked)....And so, no on the pain killers - I believe the idea is to somehow seperate body from mind (usually the procedures are done to represent some sort of spiritual evolution-and of course this is all very subjective) - Again, most tribes use the marks and scars as "symbols" and "rites of passage" for religious and spiritual ceramonies..Anyhow - I actually think it's a little more narsasistic than masochistic - as you don't want to just "feel" pain or hurt yourself - one is decorating the body for a desired result - and as in tribes often the markings or scars are indications of rankings within a certain clan - also to tell if one is married, has hit adulthood, as well one's status within the community as a whole....Blah, Blah, Blah.......Ya, so it may seem strange to the west, but I think for people who choose this - well, it's serving the soul in some sort of Moderen yet primitive way------ya's dig???
