Last night I had a nightmare about a spider. We get a lot of spiders in our house, and I'm very scared of large spiders in real life, but the one in the dream was ENORMOUS.

It was about the size of a dinner plate, with extremely long thin legs. For some reason, the fact that it was smooth and thin was more frightening than if it had fat, hairy legs. It was light coppery brown in colour.

I was so scared by it that I ran, and it chased me to the fence in the backyard. Then I screamed: "Saint Brigid! Put a shield of white light around me!"

This "dream prayer" must have worked, because I woke up immediately, feeling a little foolish.

I'm not sure what this is dream about - I think spiders are mother figures, and St Brigid was a Christianised version of the Mother Goddess. Why I prayed to Brigid I don't know - I've never felt a strong connection to her at all.

Pisces Moon, you are right about spiders. Most people do not think about them that way, they can symbolize a mother figure, or energy, but usually in a negative sense - the devouring female. And I always consider the symbolism of fate.

So this dream is obviously about fear. In dreams, often fear is a symbol for anger, and anger for fear. Is there something you are currently angry about, or fearful of?

It is interesting that you called upon a mother figure to protect you from a mother figure (as you see it). I am really not certain how to interpret this.

And there is something about your "grounding", indicated by the colors and the emphasis on the spider's legs. The meaning of the smoothness of the spider is also evasive, but could relate to something that is difficult to grab on to, or something that needs to be "smoothed over". The nature of the legs could indicate something about balance, or your "standing" - thin, perhaps precarious, and perhaps frightening.

So, taken all together, it seems that you are either fearful of, or angry about, some waking situation that involves motherly feelings or instincts, perhaps some conflict between the opposites of what motherhood (or that type of energy) can represent - the good and bad aspects.

I must say that this interpretation is based almost solely on archetypal information, and very little "feeling", but I just do not get a definitive feeling.

What do you think?

Anyone else?

Since you were terribly frightened in your dream, I thought you might need to hear the 'contrary' side of the SPIDER MEDICINE CARD...it might help.

SPIDER (CONTRARY):
The contrary aspect of Spider is akin to the negative side of woman. Spider will eat her mate if she gets too caught up in herself to see the validity of honoring male energy. The warrior at her side is a strong balancing force. If you hae become disdainful of your mate (male or female) and have felt very superior recently, you are not honoring either your male or female side.

If you are not presently in a relationship, you may have chosen a member of your family or a workmate to harass. This type of negative criticism only breaks down relations, and is a reflection of something you hate about yourself. If you are trying to feed your ego in this manner, you have lost the game. You are entangled in the web of your own illusion about who you really are. It may be time to look at why you are being critical and why you are feeling so weak that you must attack others.

If this does not apply to your situation, take a look at another message that contrary Spider medicine bring: lack of creativity. If you fail to use your talents to get the web spinning, your lack of creativity can change into destructiveness. If you are feeling stagnant and unable to move in a positive direction, youi may come to resent others who are doing well. This resentment will become a Black Widow Spider and eat you up, and the only one to mourn your demise will be you. Get moving, find joy and new ideas in the accomplishments of others, and use them to propel you into a new phase of creative spinning on your own web of delight. Observe Spider's web and find pleasure in the ideas you receive from her universal language.

from THE MEDICINE CARDS by Jamie Sams & David Carson

Pisces Moon...I sorta took it from another angle. That maybe it was a message. And Ra's thoughts were in tune with this explanation, so maybe you can go from there.

And something else....I wondered how you 'knew' to call on Brigid? Do you suppose that was a 'past life' memory jumping in to help you?

Ra, as always I am in AWE of your dream interpertations

....Aw, heck! What I really wanted to say was.....

This place just inspires our ELFS to climb to greater hights. It opens our minds and spirits, and gives us the freedom to express what we find there. There is no way I could be the person I am today without all the yesterdays here in Randall's LindaLand and all it's 'inspiring'
's teaching and guiding me!
And you have no idea how much you, RA ...have taught me!

Wow, great comments from both of you! Ra, I never considered that fear could be related to anger.

I do think it must be about mothers, as I had a bad "mother in law" dream the following night.

All I can think of is that I might be resentful of my mother-in-law. She recently helped us out financially (a small loan, paid back almost immediately, not a gift), and maybe part of me is angry at myself for not providing enough on my own. The mother-in-law dream surprised me, as I actually have a pretty good relationship with my mother-in-law - allowing for the usual relationship issues.

YIVY, thanks for that Medicine Card. The thing about lack of creativity struck a chord, because I've been so focussed on domestic things that I have been neglecting my writing. The Brigid thing eludes me. Maybe it was a past life thing. Or this ... Brigid is very popular in Scotland, and my own mother, as well as my mother-in-law, are both Scottish. Perhaps there is a tie-in here.

I think I'll have to ponder this a while longer. Often if I'm stuck on a dream, the dreams become clearer and more obvious over time.
