The Native Indians believe that we have an animal guiding us "medicine".
The bear is a protectress of family and powerful and strong and intelligent. Maybe your animal guide appeared to you!
What do you think? Have you seen a bear many times before?

No, first time as I remember. Interesting what you say, because I've grown up with this western belief of the bear as the big destroyer..killing the sheep of the farmer so they have to kill the bear etc.

Yes, sadly that is true for a lot of people.
As our civilization expanded we forgot to look out for the rest of God's creation and when they inconvenience us we make them out to me horrendous monsters...something like our fears.
Same image associated with the wolves I guess!
I love Mother Nature and her animals, plants and I see a beautiful part of God's soul in each of them, that is why I identify so deeply with the Native Indian culture.

Anyway with you probably since that is the image you associate with the bear maybe its a symbol of a fear you have

Hi Stella, I have dreamt of bears several times, and have never thought of them as destroyers, although they occasionally HAVE been destroying, threatening, running after and so on in my dreams. I don't know much about how Native Americans looked at bears in particular showing up in dreams, but animals in dreams are supposed to be our spiritual guide, or show our animal side.

Bears are fiercely protective of their cubs. They are strong, brave, curious, have an excellent memory; they wade a river ince, and they remember forever exactly what rocks to step on and which to avoid. they can live off grass, fish or sheep, whatever the nature provides, and I like to think they have a warm and tender heart (since they are so protective and caring for their cubs). They are not at all slow or stupid; they can hunt down moose and have excellent instincts. They hibernate during winter, giving birth while sleeping, more or less. And like many humans, they don't like to be disturbed while sleeping. ugh, I'm totally taking off, here...

I don't know what to make of your bear, but I would not be put off by its visit. Try to look at its traits and how it acted in your dream, see what it is trying to tell you about yourself right now.

sadly when my husband was a child he dreamt of a bear chasing him...recently we discovered through therapy that this bear represented his grandfather and the child molestation that he had suffered from that man...

I don't remember much of the dream, actually, but there were several bears and I was supposed to write an article about them or something...They were not threatening at all and I was not scared or put off - it was more like I studied them. This was what puzzled me, in a way...So, Evergreen and Mystique, thank you very much, what you write about animal guide our my animal side make more sense...I'm really not an animal person on the surface, but I guess deep down we all have a memory of a connection with wild animals...
Evergreen, do you know more about animals being spiritual guides? I'd like to learn more!

Unfortunately I don't know much at all about animals as spiritual guides. But I do think we have a lot to learn from each other and from other (non-human) aspects of nature. I grew up with animals, and know they have personalities, good and bad days, traits, strengths and weaknesses, habits and vices, intelligence, instincts just like humans have, just slightly different.

I know Native Americans, Aborigins and other people living closer to nature than most people in the modern civilization, place greater importance to their dreams, visions and so on, whether these are provoked (by putting themselves in a trance) or occur naturally. And the message or enlightenment is given through an animal, bird, the wind whispering and so on. Whether it is a spiritual guide or just our own inner guide/ wise guy shining through... whatever is easiest to believe and make you listen and or act upon it.

since you ask, I get more curious... think I'll try to read up on the subject and rethink my animal dreams... hehe.

Could be your bear dream means you should pay more attention to (study) those traits of the bear means to you?

They can also be symbols of cyclic activity.

Today I was reading about the sanctuary of Artemis Vravronia outside Athens: Vravron was dedicated to Artemis, the goddess protecting hunters, but also the protector of all animals. One day, having become enraged of by the killing of a tame she-bear by two young brothers, she caused an epidemic to fall on Athens. Then she asked an oracle to tell that all young girls between 5 and 10 living in Attica (Athens-area) should be dedicated to her. The Athenians complied to the goddess's demand and brought the girls to the temple, where they spent long period of time during their childhood serving her and participating in the feasts held there. The girls going to the temple were called arktoi, bears.

More about bear symbolism:

For many the bear (and the wolf) are the last true symbols of the primal, natural world. During the winter sleep the bear's kidneys shut down completely. The kidneys serve a vital function in the body. Metaphysically, the kidneys are symbols of discernment and discrimination. Maybe you or someone around you are either beeing too critical or not discriminating enough.

One is encouraged to climb trees occasionally, like the bear, if only to get a clear perspective.

Seeing/being visited by a bear can symbolize a need to have periods in your life when you can be more reclusive, even to give birth to some ideas or projects. Be patient though, as the "cubs" (projects) usually stay with the mother for up to two years... And don't hide away and try to hibernate all-year round. Come out of the den. Only then can your "cubs" get help to grow on their own.

Bear medicine can teach you to go deep within so that you can make your choices and decisions from a position of power.

Ursus Major, The Great Bear is a well known constellation. Seven stars of this constellation form The Big Dipper (Karlsvogna), and they have links to the seven great rays of light of the Divine.

The bear has lunar symbology as well, giving it ties to the subconscious and even unconscious mind. It teaches you to awaken the Power of the Unconscious. To go within to find the resources, energy and essence necessary for survival. The bear was an animal associated with the goddess Diana, a goddess of the moon.

Thanks, Evergreen! I think I had another bear dream, but I don't remember it. The village is covered with snow, so I definatly just feel like hibernating...

Every season has its charm, no??
I know you hate snow; everybody who has been within a 20 kilometer radius of you when it's snowy know...
Stay warm, make hot chocolate and think about all the spring gardening you have time to plan because it's still snowing!!!
