I lucid dream alot. But I always wake up before my dreams really end. Anyhow, does anyone have reccuring dreams, and know how to make them stop....? I've had this dream ever since I was little, that I'm being chased down a street at night. It always feels very real,I can feel the wind and see the tree leaves moving. In my dream I always take note of the street lamps ,and count them as I pass them (there's nine ). I never feel scared,I feel more like it's something I'm supposed to be doing. And I never find out the identity of the 'chaser'.When I've been lucid during the dream , I always attempt to turn around and see who's chasing me,but I wake up before I get a chance to.Sometimes I'm very happy and skipping down the street, and other times I feel scared and I'm aware that I'm a child in my dream. Any ideas on what it could mean?

Welcome, ally!

For the most part, this type of theme is not too unusual for a recurring dream, but there is one aspect of it that has me uncertain.

The core of the dream is fairly straightforward (I think!). There was some experience or situation in your childhood that has been repressed (being chased), pushed into your unconscious where it remains hidden and secret (night), awaiting a time in which it will eventually emerge (nine) into awareness, and your unconscious has provided the necessary "light" for guidance in this direction (street lamps). There is something more to the number nine but I cannot quite put a finger on it. It is a number of power, of triple completion (3x3/mind, body, spirit), or of birth. Or it could indicate an age - are you aware of something stressful happening at the age of nine?

This dream is recurring because the issue has not been resolved within your mind - or - there are situations in your life that are recurring which activate this repressed material.

Becoming lucid is one of the best ways to end recurring dreams, as this enables you to directly confront the energy behind them - as you have attemtped to do! I do not know the reason that this has not worked for you yet. If you can become lucid enough, you may wish to try and actually change the content. For instance, you could change the night into day (unconscious into awareness) - or you could stop counting the lamps at eight, or count one extra, making them ten (completion). Something like that could initiate the release of additional information.

The aspect that throws me is the different feelings - sometimes "happy and skipping", sometimes scared. A question: when you are aware of being a child, are you always scared? And when you are happy, are you not a child?

What do you think?

That gave me chills. I'm not sure why.
It made alot of sense, but I don't think there's anything about my childhood that I've repressed.
To answer your question, when I feel scared I'm more aware of the fact that I am a child and alone. Like I'm not supposed to be outside at night, I wonder why I am, who's chasing me,and if anybody's looking for me.
When I'm happy, sometimes I realize that I'm a child, other times it seems that I'm just not aware of it.

Hmmm ... a "physical" response, i.e. chills, is an unusual reponse if there is no truth in the statement. Of course, anything repressed would not register in your conscious memory, because it is not part of your conscious awareness at this time.

Do you think that you are able to change some of the content, as I stated?

Can you think of anything from your early childhood that was stressful? Divorce, death of someone close, moving, etc. ?

I think there is something in your past which haunts your emotional body.

Hmmm. I guess I'll have to give it more thought, because I honestly can't think of anything that would've caused the dream, or that I've repressed. I'm able to change the content in other dreams when I'm lucid, but this one is different. I always wake up just a moment or so after I realize I'm dreaming.
The things you listed "divorce, death of someone close, moving" . . .
None of that. I really can't imagine what could've been stressful enough to cause it. *sigh*

I am not done with this yet! I have another thought about this, which I hope to be able to relay to you tomorrow.

Perhaps we need not focus upon some mysterious, repressed childhood event ...

We can look at this from a slightly different viewpoint. This recurring dream could be seen as more of a reflection of events/experiences that have occurred throughout your life - a personal indicator of sorts. This dream could manifest at times when you do not know exactly where you are going, but know that you are supposed to be doing whatever it is you are doing, for some higher purpose. Sometimes there may be anxiety related to unknowns in your path, and sometimes you may feel content with the unknowns you are facing (or that are "chasing" you).

So the trick to verifying this possibility would be to correlate the appearance of these dreams with events/experiences/circumstances that happened just before the dreams, or during the same time.

Thoughts?

Does this ring a little truer?

That does make more sense! I don't know why I never thought of that . . .
and it would kind of explain the streetlamps, right? Sort of guiding me,maybe?
The 'nine' still puzzles me,though. Why are there nine streetlamps?
Anyhow, thanks for helping me figure it out.The dream has puzzled me since I was a kid,and now it makes alot more sense.
