My friend had a nightmare several months ago. He was a soldier in a war torn country assigned to stand guard a building by himself. He was contacted by local authorities there is a murderer that kills only at night and is coming to the building. He is confronted with a decision whether or not he is going to catch this murderer. He waits inside and watches the Sun fall to dusk. Perplexed thoughts: if he leaves the lights on, the murderer won't come, if left off, he could get killed or catch him. He decides to quietly turn off the lights and walks through the building. He hears footsteps and attempts to get close enough to catch him . . . My friend finds a light switch and turns it on.It was his father. IP: Logged |

Woah, that is deep. Before jumping to any conclusions, I will give this some thought. Do you know how your friend felt when seeing the father? Is the father living? IP: Logged |

Well, I suppose if it were truly a nightmare, his father's presence probably was not exactly a party. As I see this dream, your friend was/is undergoing a fight/battle (soldier/war-torn country) that has something to do with his psyche (guarding building). His higher self (local authorities) is warning him that some sort of damage is being done (murderer) on an unconscious level (kills only at night). The damage or destruction concerns some aspect of himself that is not being taken seriously, or not being respected, and this is probably something that causes him anger, although he is not fully aware of the extent or depth to which this situation is affecting him. He appears to be at a cross-roads of sorts (confronted with decision) and perhaps there is a need to deal with this before it is "too late" (sun setting), or perhaps he will need to wait until the ending of some current cycle (sun setting) in order to properly deal with it - I am not sure which. He can either push this situation and the connected emotions farther into his unconscious, or he can face his feelings and try to root out the cause. His dream-self decided to shed some light on it. Ironically, it seems that he must "dim" his awareness (turn lights off) in order to become more aware (catch murderer). But this makes sense ... this suggests that he must be willing to take a serious, honest look at his inner self, at his subconscious activities, which can only be done by not rationalizing and by dropping preconceived notions about why he is the way he is. Through the activity of investigating those aspects of himself which are hidden, secret, or sub/unconscious (walking through building with lights off), he will discover (turns light on) the destructive influence (murderer). This influence is either an authoritative entity, or his actual father. Remember that this dream reflects whatever was happening in his life several months ago - so, questions: What was/is the point of conflict between father and son, or son and authority figure? What was/is causing feelings of pain or anger? Is someone (father or authority) not respecting some aspect of your friend's life or personality? Does he feel rejected in some way, or like something inside himself is being hurt? How long has this been going on? Of course, I could be completely off-base about all of this, so let me know what he thinks, and we can continue or rethink from there if necessary. IP: Logged |

Dear Ra,Do you know how your friend felt when seeing the father? This is what he says: "was similiar to being in the middle of a horror movie, you know the characters, but don't know who the bad one is yet." Aphrodite IP: Logged |
