For those who speak more than one language, what language do you dream in???????? just curious............. Also, what language do you think in? I discussed this with my co-workers the other day, and all the bi-lingual ones said they think in both languages, but couldn't answer the dream question. IP: Logged |

First I am not Bi-lingual, but I have an question related to your question, When you think or dream, does language really even exist? What if the language part only comes into play when you recount what you, saw/heard/said in the dream to someone else? Perhaps there is no language to thoughts and dreams. Perhaps you only attach language to thoughts and dreams when you attpempt to explain them to someone. Therefore, the language then would depend on what language you are speaking when you first think to try to explain it to someone, wouldn't it? Just a thought to ponder...IP: Logged |

Well 2 nights ago in a dream someone told me they love me. This morning in a dream my coworkers told me to go buy donuts on my way to work. I remember the language. But I do think everything is telepathic both in the dream state and in the Spirit world. IP: Logged |

well i speak 3 languages while thinking i think in the language which is also the medium of my education-English. but when i am excited, angry, happy or sad (u can say emotional)i revert back to my mother tongue. while dreaming it sorta depends on the situation like if i am speaking to my family its a different language, with my friends its again different. but basically i dream in my mother tongue-the first language i learnt .IP: Logged |

i speak 2 lanugagesi think in English...the only time i do anything in my mother tongue is when i talk to my family...and when people want me to translate, i get quite confused when talking both at the same time, and i basically start thinking in both. dreaming....when i have definite thoughts...their in english...i think thats because i have a far more advanced vocabulary in english...the only time i ever speak my mother tongue is to my parents. i agree though, dreams dont really need a language ------------------ " I seem to have loved you in numberless forms, numberless times, in life after life, in age after age, forever." ~Rabindranath Tagore~ ~sigh~ IP: Logged |

All of that makes a lot of sense! And there is no doubt that the sub/unconscious mind speaks in symbol, metaphor, and emotion. IP: Logged |

I speak 2 languages fluently, and have picked up a little, here and there, of a few others. English is my second language because my parents have never really spoken it much (although they can get along just fine if they really have to ), and I only learned English when I started school. However, over the years, I have come to speak English far more often than anything else. When I think, it is usually in English. When I have to speak in another language, I have to think what I want to say (in English) and then translate it to said language. Unless, as super_bull noted, I'm upset or excited ... then languages just run over each on their way out of my mouth, though I'm sure anyone listening would get the jist of what I'm feeling . As far as dreams go, I find that I remember my dreams in English, regardless of whether or not it was spoken in the dream. I've had dreams where, for example, I'm in a distant land talking with native people and communicating with them in their own language and then continue the rest of the dream (I usually have long, ongoing dreams that change scenes with fair frequency) in whatever language applies, though more often than not, it is English. However, I am only aware of the differences in the languages when I wake up ... and yet the idea of what was related is still clear. One of my most memorable dreams occurred in "prehistoric" times ... I was an early tribes woman and I was with my mate. We were foraging for food when, all of a sudden, a sabertooth attacked him. The 3D-I'm-watching-myself-angle kicked in, and I could see their terror on my face and I knew exactly what I was feeling ... even though the woman in the dream (me) was uttering what, to my concious mind, would be gibberish, and howling like a banshee. Then the angle switched back, and, even though he wasn't saying anything verbally, I knew my mate wanted me to get out of there the instant I looked in his eyes ... they were so sad and blue ... This all took a matter of seconds in the dream, of course. Anyway, I think our dreams speak to our subconcious in whatever way is more appropriate to us as individuals, whether it be symbols, colors, images, signs, words, allegories, etc. or any combination of these and more. However, I think it is up to our concious waking minds to translate them for us when we wake. And then it's up to all of our parts together (soul, mind, Spirit, flesh body) to try to figure it all out and apply it, which can sometimes prove to be a little frustrating, but well worth it in the end. In my family we speak "Ginglish" i.e. German-English mix. When we're together it's hard to follow our convos for people who aren't fluent in both languages (even those who are have a hard time switching back and forth lol) I know I dream both in Englisch (first language) and German (Second language). It depends on what I'm dreaming about. If I'm dreaming about work (too often grr!) then it's in German. If I'm dreaming about friends back at home in Canada, it's english. A lot of times, though, you don't remember the language, though I'm a very verbal person and the language is very important to me. Nackie IP: Logged |
