Id like to know if anyone else has had an experience of Sleep Paralysis?

My experience happened when I had to move to the United States for a couple of years for my step-fathers work transfer. It stressd me out alot and big changes were happening. And most mornings when I wake up, I lay there awake but unable to move my body, and its so frightening. I panic and feels like eternity I cant move. I do gain movement again, but its very disturbing.
I never went to a Doctor as it went away.

The worst episode was when I arrived in America and I was tired so I lay down for a nap, before I went to sleep my body became paralised, and I tried to scream out for my mum and no sound came out. Then I felt a wave over water come over me, and some sort of small animal walked over me, i was imagining all this. Seemed so real. Then I rolled off my bed and hit my mouth on the floor, I was about to flip out, when I came out of it and was in my bed and didnt really fall out on the floor. But it felt so real. I told mum straight away and she said 'this all happend in 2 minutes?' Felt like half an hour for me.

Anyway, it doesnt happen any more, has any one had this happen? Or what do you think sleep paralysis is caused from?

Welcome to LindaLand, SunChild!

I may have an answer or possibility ... as we "go to sleep", there is a process involved getting from one state to the other. This process follows some general steps ... body relaxes, physiology changes, mental noise reduction, more relaxation, brainwave changes, etc. Every now and then, due to any number of circumstances, a step or two may get out of order, out of their usual sequence.

So, either your conscious awareness did not "switch off" when it should have, or your imagination/subconsciousness "switched on" before it usually does. And everyone experiences paralysis when they sleep, otherwise we would physically act out our dreams. You just happened to be aware of it a few times, out of the usual sequence. I am sure you could find MANY people who have felt this paralysis, I have!

Hi Ra thanks,
My mother actually said my body probably fell asleep before my brain did. Thats similar to what your saying. Which makes complete sense. I had a feeling nothing serious was wrong with me, I knew it had to be something like that.
Your explanation has made me feel better, so if it happens again I wont be so frightened. Were you frightened when you went through it? And how long does it last for you?

Your mother is far more concise and accurate than I! That is what I meant precisely.

The first time I was literally "petrified" when I came out of a dream in which I was killed, so that did not help the fear factor at all! I am not sure how long that one lasted, but it felt like an eternity.

I later learned that this state of "body asleep, mind awake" can be achieved deliberately as a spring-board to other states ... quite useful.

I've had this happen to me many times too, SunChild. Scary isn't it? I sympathize. Got a little chill when I read, "some sort of animal walked over me". I've also felt that too. Unfortunately, I also heard it and saw it. Yuck. I think the mind-awake-before-the body theory is accurate. It occured to me at one point that it might be something I could work with, expand and control. As for the fear, I became so used to it happening I learned to just lie there and wait for the paralysis to pass.

Thats the main thing you must keep in mind, is knowing it will pass. But the fear always lingers in the back of my mind in the moment hoping it will be over soon. Ive tried to bring myself into meditation whilst in paralysed, that helps. Its a facinating experience.

Hiya SunChild
I used to have MANY sleep paralysis episodes when i was young - around 6-7-8. I used to feel 'people' holding me down, and touching me inappropritly. Needless to say this used to scare me S*%#less as a child. The hardest thing was no one actually believed me when i told them what was happening to me - they just told me to go back to sleep... I found out after leaving that house that someone had died in the room i used to sleep in... may be an answer there for you?

Thank God these episodes stopped when i moved

Although a couple of months ago, i was travelling long distance on a bus when i fell asleep. I heard a male voice say "Erin! Erin! I want you Erin!" (Erin being my first name . I only woke up when i remembered that no one on that bus could possibly know my name! Again this experience was quite shocking becasue of my experiences as a child...

I hope this helps somehow? Take care of yourself
LOL

Hi Nebel,
It could have something to do with the energies in the room, knowing that someone died there may have explained a lot for you, though in my case, i have experienced exactly the same episodes at home, at the hotel i was staying at during the transition of moving to america, and in america too.

I think its more of a body/mind techinical fault, as Ra explained body falling asleep before the mind, or reversed when woken... The actual cause of this occurance is still unknown to me. The hallucinations you heard is rather mysterious. I never heard words as such, just sounds that were strange to me, like sound effects of waves, and thuds.

Thanks for sharing Nebel.
love & light 2 u.

eewww. I've heard my name called too while in this state. A low, guttural, male voice. Intelligent and very demanding. Powerful. Something sort of taunting or teasing in the voice too. I can't describe how awful it is to someone who hasn't heard it. It's sort of comforting to know there are others out there who know what I mean. I wonder what the psychologists would say?

Interesting question--psychologists? I dont think they have the answer for that one. They'll say your sufferin hallucinations. I was actually going to go see a nuerologist.

Although it is a scary experience, I am glad to know of others that have this happen to them.

I too hear my name being called. I see bright lights that move around the room, like a car passing by on the street only brighter. A couple of years ago I heard a scraping noise that seemed to come from the wall above my head.

Although I wasn't asleep at the time, I have heard people calling my name. I could move my body, but I definetly heard someone call my name, and there was no explanation for it. Mum said it could have come from the wind.

Could it be my mind was on the verge of sleep whilst my body was not.

Doubt it, but anyway.

It's not the first time i've had it happen, about 5-6 times I would be alone and hear someone call my name.

So, as with your dreams, you are not alone in this either.

Yep, I've had sleep paralysis too. I noticed that it usually happens before I float out of my body, and have an OBE, and when I come back from the OBE. And lemme tell you, yes, psychologists will say you suffer from hallucinations if you tell them you see/hear things. Psychiatrists, will tell you to pop a pill. Now depending on the situation, unless they happen to be aware, or have studied, or believe, that we more than a bio/chemical reaction, then they might not be able to help in this kind of situation-given that the situation was not already chemically induced, or there are other underlying factors. ...Maybe that's why they say that yu are alone on your journey, cuz people won't belive you... *I don't remmeber what the quote was exactly*
