Hi, I would love to hear some opinions- ideas, or comments on a recurring dream I have been having for the last 3 years.
Its goes something like this: I am driving my car down the highway, to go to the supermarket. I take the wrong exit, and 5 minutes later I am in a strange city. I seem to think the city is very familiar, so I park my car in a parking garage, then spend the rest of the dream wandering the city on foot.
I always go to the same places: A big monument of some man thats next to a huge library, A very steep flight of stairs going up the side of a hill-very beautiful and made of marble or some other stone, And then I always end up in a beautiful old neighborhood full of old houses, and end up at an ancient, crumbling stone church- its right next to the water(a lake i think) and even though it looks as if it may crumble, i cant resist going inside it. When I go in, theres a very dark spiral staircase made of old stone(carved) that I feel i must climb. I can never remember what i see at the top though.
Ive had this dream so many times that I really feel like i know this city, and if I happened to go there, i would be able to find my way around just as I would here, where i am living.
Any thoughts??

Welcome bly!

Interesting dream.

In the course of life (highway) there are times when it is necessary to find those things you need to exist (supermarket) ... (pretty generic so far )But you take the wrong exit. I would normally say that this symbolizes some wrong decision or action, but in the context of this dream it almost seems guided, as if you are being intentionally diverted by your subconscious for some reason. So, the message could be that what you are looking for, that which you need, is not where you think it is ... or that before you can continue along your path, you must acknowledge or accomplish something. What do you think?

I have much more in my notes, but I have no more time to type at the moment. The gist of the dream relates to spiritual development, and perhaps to old patterns or even past lives. The question is, what situation in waking life triggers this dream? Recurring dreams usually have some sort of trigger in waking life ... a stress related situation, change, a person, an issue, an emotion/feeling, etc.

Can you think of anything in common about your circumstances just before, or during, the times of these dreams?

I will come back and finish my thoughts as soon as I can.

I've never had a recurring dream. But I've had dreams that continue--like sequels to a movie.

Really? I don't think this dream ever changes much. At least it always starts the same, with taking the wrong exit on the highway, and then i start seeing the familiar buildings, and i know I'm back again. I guess, there are parts of the dream that change, but the setting is always the same.
Heres something really weird about my dreams though- I never have (as far as i can recall) ever had a nightmare. Doesnt everyone have them at one time or another? I dont believe i ever have, my dreams are always either strange adventures, or just really boring and repetitive. Just something that occured to me .

Hi
Never had a nightmare. That is unique. I read somewhere that nightmares are like your minds way of alerting you to something you are not dealing with. Are you the type of person that confronts issues in your life head on? Back to your dream very interesting I've had similar dreams in the past about staircase needing to go up them, old building crumbling etc. There of course are a million ways to interpret a dream. To me it seems like maybe you are going through some sort of change in your life, or you desperately want to. I always get dreams of this nature when I'm wanting to get out of a situation or I'm in the middle of it, but that is of course just an opinion. The stairs are like an obstacle to overcome and crumbling buildings maybe represent the structure of your life crumbling apart. Now I'm getting really Freudian here LOL, but ya just a thought.

crazyaries, get Freudian any time you like!

To finish my notes ...

The "wrong" exit takes you into an unfamiliar, or unconscious, aspect of your psyche (strange city, though familar). In this realm of self your vehicle, your usual mode of "travel", of thinking, of being, must be left behind (park car) and you must seek under your own power, at your own pace (walking).

So, where exactly have you been led? What part of yourself is being visited? A place of great knowledge and information (monument/huge library), a place of development and progress (stairs), a place of old foundations, perhaps past-lives (old neighborhood/houses), and a place of spiritual unfoldment (ancient church). The church seems to be the destination, and is the only place you actually go into. There are also many symbols surrounding it.

This church symbolizes your spiritual path, and the lake symbolizes your personal unconscious. So, it may seem as if your belief structure, your spiritual/religious foundation, is crumbling away, but this is only part of the process. Our old foundations set the groundwork for the new. Our old structures contain within the process of unfoldment and of continuing life/growth (spiral staircase).

The dream seems to be saying, "do not worry about feeling lost ... being lost leads to discovery, and this is part of the Plan."

You know this city because the city is you. There is some aspect of your life that causes this dream to repeat. It could be a fear, a habit, an emotion, or a lesson not yet learned.

Does this make sense?

Any idea what might be causing these dreams?

Did you somehow feel lost around the time of this dream? Are you searching for something?
