I get this sometimes where my mind seams to wake up before my body and then I panic, I feel like something is out to get me, is this possibly because of stress?? Has anyone else experienced this?

According to something I read by Echo Bodine, she says that our souls leave our bodies and go on little "trips" every night. This is astral projection. You are probably waking up while your soul is going through astral projection and that is what is causing your sleep paralysis. Just ask for your soul to come back mentally and stay still for a few moments until you are able to be fully awake

Jen-

I have had sleep paralysis many times. I see lights and shadowy figures and hear evil laughter. I have learned that stress causes this and that the terror that I feel is in response to the feeling that I cannot move.

I have found that meditation works for me. I have a very ridge bedtime routine that relaxes me and since I started doing that I no longer suffer from the sleep paralysis.

Believe me when I say that I understand what you are going through. It is MUCH different than astro-projection. Many doctors believe that many of the people that believe that they have been visited by aliens are actually suffering from sleep paralysis. I even know someone that had to go through several sleep studies to diagnose this problem.

I know that I haven't been much help but I wanted to let you know that you are not alone in this.

Thank you Irish, this is me I had to change my screenname cuz I lost my password and my email got cut off! Anyway, it actually happened against today....I am almost postive it is becuase of stress....I woke up at 5 (after a very long day yesterday) this morning, and then I had a stressful morning and ended up crying, I went back to bed and then it happened....so I figure it was from lack of sleep, stress and then my I had some woman problems if you know what I mean so change in the body did it. I didn't panic this time and it helped but there was a loud ringing in my ears that scared me....but I could hear my dog breathing and it was calming.

Hi Jennifer, welcome to LindaLand

You actually described the condition precisely when you said "my mind seems to wake up before my body" ... that is what is happening, happens to a lot of people (and scares the bejeezus out of them ). When in the beginnings of this state, the subconscious (or your dream consciousness) oftentimes is not yet fully 'turned off' either, so the imagination can play all sorts of nasty tricks on you, especially if you are feeling fear from being paralyzed. Thankfully, it is usually very short lived.

Understanding it is everything. Some people use this state (when not in fear, of course) go out-of-body.

Thank you Ra, I am understanding more about it, I think next time it happens I will keep myself calm because nothing has happened yet so I'm sure everything will be fine. I used to think I was being possessed by a demon or something awful like that and my dad has told me that he has experienced this too and feel like there are robbers in the house.

That's the right attitude ... know that nothing can harm you, be calm, and relax. You may even enjoy it, who knows?
