There is a battle going on within you, between your higher (old man upstairs) and lower (thing downstairs) natures. At the moment (or at the time of the dream), you are caught in the middle (sitting on stairs), not certain what to do, yet "compelled" to face this 'thing downstairs'. It seems you are facing aspects of your own lower nature, like fear itself, and this by self-design, and you fear that your higher nature may not be strong enough to help or overcome (old man can barely walk/stumbling).
