The only dreams I ever seem to be able to remember are anxiety filled dreams. This has been for as long as I can remember. I know that I must have other dream throughout the night (otherwise, one would think I would have gone psychotic by now), but I can't ever seem to remember the good / mundane ones.

I read on the internet that you can increase your dream recall ability by keeping a dream journal. I began doing this, and it did help me pin down the psychological issues my dreams were trying to work through, but it did not seem to help in any other way. Oddly enough, I found in keeping the journal, that for the dreams that I could remember, I had excellent recall of the dream. I was able to write pages and pages and pages of things I could remember from the dream, and there was really very little I could not. But, still I am unable to remember any other dreams... My mother tells me how much she enjoys sleeping and enjoys her dreams, as does my boyfriend, but the only time I enjoy sleeping is when I don't remember any at all...

I am capable of remembering them in such detail that it is as if I am reliving them.... I can feel all of the anxiety and knots coming back as strongly as I felt them in the dream as I try to think about each one. Even months later, I can still remember them in detail and have the same emotional responses to them when I think about them.

I have wanted for so long to have and remember good dreams, or perhaps even just boring / normal dreams. Does anyone have any advice that might help me?

Hello alcheme

How long have you been keeping your dream journal? It could be that you simply need more time. As you pin down and work through the psychological issues, consciously, you should notice an increase in more positively energized dreams.

The only advice I can think of at the moment is to "program" yourself to recall some pleasant dreams. Akin to a mantra, tell yourself over and over, just before you fall asleep, that you will recall a pleasant dream. Sooner or later your subconscious will respond and you will recall a pleasant dream.

As Linda would say, "Ordain it!"

Keep us posted! I would love to hear about your first good, recall of a pleasant dream.

Thank you for your helpful and well thought-out response!

I have been keeping my dream journal for a couple of months, now. It had crossed my mind that perhaps it just had not been long enough, but the level of detail that I can recall is what confused me, as well as the length of time I can continue recalling them in that level of detail. I was even able to back-track several months in my journal, being able to write pages ad pages of information about several dreams I had months before. Many things had I had read indicated that the point of the dream journal was to teach yourself to slowly learn to recall "more" or "better". Given that, I wondered if my inability to recall anything but these types of dreams was significant of not a recall problem but some other issue "blocking" me.

I had not thought about this possible solution, but I am willing to give it a go.

Hi alcheme

I wondered if my inability to recall anything but these types of dreams was significant of not a recall problem but some other issue "blocking" me.

A very intuitive reasoning that could very well be so.

Any progress?
