The dog must have followed me because now it is off leash and crosses the street coming towards me. At first I was wary then I realized it had good intentions. When the dog was next to me I kept petting it and the dog was totally friendly and happy and leaves afterwards.

Here comes the bad part. When the dog was heading back, it was almost hit by one car, then when a second car narrowly misses hitting it, the dog in shock flips hits the ground and dies on the spot. The car didn't even hit it-had a heart attack maybe?

The next part of the dream begins when there is a gathering at MY place for the dog like a viewing of sorts. The dog owner is there in mourning and there is alot of people there waiting in line to pay their last respects. I was sad but was saying to myself "all of this for a dog?"(insensitive considering the dog died because of me). The people there were really, really sad.

FTR I don't own any dogs but I LOVE dogs and would like to get one but I am concerned about allergies. I have a friend that owns a dog that looks very similar to the one in the dream-does this mean something?

Dogs can represent many things. For this dream it is likely about friendship, instincts, loyalty, or unconditional love. The dream could suggest that you are being somewhat insensitive to some matter, or perhaps others are making more of it than you feel necessary. Or maybe you are ignoring some part of your life that has to do with the mentioned dog symbolism.
