I quit smoking almost a week ago and I keep having dreams that are either stressful or extremely weird.

That's quite common.
Can you remember what they are about?

The feelings & subjects in your dream can give you valuable info on if you are also releasing the addiction on a subconscious level.

And good for you! Quitting

I do.

The one from last night - I was worried about money and was running late for work.

The two from the night before -

1 - Dreamt I took in feral rats and domesticated them and took care of them. Even built them a cage. They grew to become affectionate.

2 - Was visiting my old high school to say hi to old teachers. My locker was still there. I didn't realize I still had things in it and had no idea what could be in it. The objects in it were things relative to my ex fiance. (Like a toy sword that lit up and made noise that we bought one New Year's Day and keys to the jeep he had when we first started dating).

That second dream with the locker is what weirded me out the most.

Lol, I had to laugh at your first one...
I think that's very much related to nicotin/addiction and/or something unhealthy which you are growing to love. Especially since rats aren't really known for their hygiene. Just how I would generally look at it.
How do you see rats yourself? What feelings did you have in the dream?
I have to look at the other one later... Not thatch time now.

Edit: school would relate to learning something, but it relates to something you picked up in the past (a habit, behaviour, etc). How did you feel? Was it light or dark?
I'm not seeing a direct link with the quitting, expect "lit up". How did you feel when you saw your exes stuff?

Something you left in the past is now either coming up and/or available to you. It was locked and now open. Same for finding keys (solutions).
You didn't start smoking around the time that you split up
By any chance or started smoking cause he did?

I'm wondering if the 3 rats could symbolize the 3 cats I had once...

Generally, I see street rats as scary and gross. Domesticated pet rats I kind of tolerate. In the dream I felt compassionate and loving toward them, they were basically acting and trained like cats by the time the dream was almost over.

With the school dream it seems like a very light and happy dream. I got to see all of my old teachers and see how they're doing and whatnot. When I opened the locker and saw stuff relating to my ex I felt happy and sad at the same time and a bit nostalgic, taking the time to remember the significance of each item.

I started smoking because we split up.

Thanks

Think they are both quite clear cut. Cats are lovely, comforting and independent creatures. Rats are not. So I think this relates to the smoking habit.

Smoking also surpresses feelings. Especially since you started smoking when you split up, the locker (emotions and memories you locked away) is now open again. It still needs to be worked through on a level to 'kick the habit'.

If it's any consolation: I am an ex-smoker (and I was a hardcore one. Just quit last year. There's a thread on it in health&healing with some real good posts & tips from others ).
Dream wise, it showed me where I was in the process.
