For a little back-story, this is a person (male) whom I went to middle school with and was boyfriend/girlfriend for awhile when we were 13-14 years old. We're only 21 days apart in birth. He was my first kiss and the first person I ever shared mutual romantic feelings for. I have not seen him in person in years (7 maybe) but we had kept in contact here and there.

Most likely I will never talk to or see him ever again because unfortunately about 5 months back he murdered his neighbor in his apartment, and I found out through mutual old classmates on Facebook. Needless to say I was immediately shook-up and shocked and I could not sleep well that night. I feel like the whole thing has affected me way more than it should have. I'm guessing this is just primarily because I was at one time involved with him.

Anyways, on to the dream. I can't recall too much of it, but it vaguely seems like it was a classroom-like/school setting (which I suppose would make sense). I was there in a room with a bunch of other people just kind of standing around. I noticed him, so I casually (but nervously) walked up to him and spoke. I believe I was the only one in the dream who approached him because the way the conversation went appeared to reflect the real-life tragedy. I nervously and shyly asked him how he was and I think he sarcastically snapped at me a bit, and said something similar to, "Oh just fine, what do you think?" I think we were both a bit taken aback because in the dream no one else probably felt comfortable acknowledging his presence.

I don't remember too much after that except that it seemed I was secretly helping him in some way, and it almost seems like we were in a library or something. I don't know/remember what I was trying to help him with, but I don't think anyone else was involved.

The main part of the dream that I remember and the part that is most significant that I'm intrigued by is when after awhile, it seemed like we might have been doing some weird running back and forth motions through a hallway in this library-like image I get, but I'm not sure. But I asked him if him and I were astral-traveling together (those were my exact words). I think he might have paused but then replied with a yes.

Yes, thank you Ayelet. I very much agree.

The dream begins as a reflection of your mind and emotions exploring and trying to make sense of this issue with your friend and its relationship with your psyche.

To me, it seems likely that this entire dream was more of an astral experience, becoming more lucid and more astral as the "dream" progressed. This would explain the "weird running back and forth motions" as it is often difficult to describe or put a finger on certain sensations, movements, and actions experienced in the Astral Realms. The sensations/movements are expressions of vibration and frequency.

It could be that you were indeed trying to help your friend on an astral level.
