A recent conversation got me to wondering...

Where do complete strangers in dreams come from?

So one guy tried suicide when he was about 12 by taking an overdose of his mom's pills. I should point out this wasn't depression, it was desperation to escape a nightmare scenario in which he felt victimized and brutalized with constant terrifying nightmares related to the abuse. The pills obviously didn't kill him (though he got super stoned, didn't even care when his giggles got him beaten, he remembers the stars as fists came too close to his eyes, but he talked casually and didn't feel any of it) he dreamed of an older woman he never met, nor in the 40 years since of his life who gave him a feeling of being loved and protected. There was nothing extraordinary about the dream otherwise, just him feeling safe in a loving home. There was such a sense of loss when he woke up and never dreamed of that place or her again, though also never forgot given the impression it left on him, and it seemed to be just enough to get him through childhood.

Who was she?

(I wondered if this might be related to when I had that vision of Freya under intense stress, starvation, and residual shrooms while a runaway on the streets, she was exactly who I needed to experience in order to survive. While he doesn't relate, it could be they're similar manifestations giving us what we need. Though I think in my case, Freya was also an idealized form for me to aspire to as well, whereas that doesn't fit for him.)

He remembered another dream that always haunted him of when he was about 5-6 in which he was on a playground and he met a girl that he wanted to bring home with him. He knew he was asleep and that when he went down the slide he'd wake up, so convinced her to ride in front of him hoping to bring her to the waking world. Naturally, it didn't work (though he DID wake up just as he knew he would). As he'd recently been separated from a sister he was close to by adoption I wondered if the girl was his sister, but he says it didn't feel like her.

As for me...I have people who enter them that can be intriguing as well. Unlike him, I also have at least one dream guide at times, who typically takes the form of a mostly white feathered serpent or eastern dragon (sometimes male, sometimes female, and I don't know if they're different beings, or just different aspects of the same being). In one dream I sensed a connection that made me think they were actually apart of me, at least linked to my own energy (my chi or kundalini?).

Also of interest, though I haven't dreamed of this person in many years, was a small blond boy. In some he was my son, in others my little brother. My feelings of protectiveness and affection were the same for him regardless. There were usually tragic situations or danger around him I have never met this boy in my life (and I can't have children).

Oh! One of the most haunting and depressing was when I had a daughter. I think it was an alternate timeline when Earth went into a nuclear holocaust back in 1983, but in this case it wasn't averted and the world as we knew it was destroyed. I had a daughter who was sick and badly mutated and I still lived on the family farm (rural enough that it was probably one of the few barely livable places, and even so I was dying just as my daughter would once I was dead). I felt such sadness for this mutant child as I woke up knowing she would suffer and die alone soon after me, and there wasn't anything I could do to help her.

(Hmm, 1983...in one of the dreams of that blond boy I mentioned above, our world was invaded by aliens, and I escaped with him and my cousin through a time machine that took us back to 1983. I don't know why that time, though it would make sense I wouldn't want to go back further than when I was born in 82, and I also wanted time to be better prepared for the invasion. I wonder if there's something about that year.)

Any who study dreams want to comment on this? While we both have guesses, we're ultimately baffled by these aspects of the dream world and who these strangers are that are no stranger in the dream, but rather people we somehow know very well.

Glad that the guy survived the overdose. Seems perhaps that it acted as a cathartic for him? Also let him 'see into' the other realms in a conscious kind of way that the body normally limits, with its own obscuring crushing ceiling, would not in normal ways allow.

When I started reading, I 'instantly' recalled your vision of Freya.. and then, you mentioned it. Yes!

Abused, and/or abandoned kids grow up in a reality of such profound isolation-within. Perhaps those circumstances and states are conducive to uncovering special gifts in conscious awareness-- because they act as tools, needed for safety and survival-itself.

{{My Heart goes out to anyone who has had to experience that!! *huge comforting embraces*}}

There IS another world we connect with-- and are not readily conscious of. We are told that there ARE special astral beings who are 'assigned' to watch over our soul-selves. Your guy was given something VERY special when he received the 'sense of being solidly loved'. THAT kind of affirmation from the other-side of mundane consciousness can bring a security that sustains a person through the rest of their lives. Some folks have much-harder lives than others. I think that 'those' astral experiences accompanied with a {permanent} conscious take-away, can provide a needed source of 'refreshing', that remains available long-term, for the journey of that soul.

You already know about the three nights of incredibly lucid dreams I had about my Scorpio Grandmother. She HUGGED me and I 'felt' her hug. I asked her 'why' .. and she said to me, 'because you have bones.' When I looked up bones in dream dictionaries, the meaning of that symbol was not something to relish. It's a warning of harsh events and catastrophes about to come.
.. In 'real life' my Scorpio Grandmother was not-at-all a physically demonstrative person. That was part of the 'surprise' of that dream. But it was her way of saying just how much she loved me.

When I was in my preteens, I was doing mummy-dives into the deep end of a swimming pool. My right big toe temporarily got trapped in a metal grate at the bottom of the deep end of that pool. I struggled. Toe eventually released.. and it was a LONG LONG ascent from the bottom to the surface of the pool water. Part of the way up, this GORGEOUS female voice began giving me instructions, and coached me NOT to breathe yet. I wanted to take a breath so bad-- and she kept telling me to 'wait'. And wait.
.. My preteen life 'flashed before my eyes'. Saw my blue bike up against the wall of the garage. Yup. My beloved bike!!
.. When I 'surfaced' my uncle and others were there hollering. They had noticed.

The rare and MOST-beautiful female voice .. my Guardian Angel?

Pixie.. Some of us get 'visited' in those astral realms. Some have 'talents' to access the other-side.

"Consciousness" is deliciously complex.
People who believe in reincarnation would even have things to add to these kinds of conversations.

Thank you, mirage.

It makes sense that it's shamanic in nature. And the original shamanism was rooted in traumatic experiences (sometimes chosen, sometimes not) along with ways to alter the consciousness, so it does make sense that our dreams would be shamanic in nature, especially from a traumatic and deprived background where one is seeking escape, transformation, or desperately wanting help from someone.

I'll have to think on this some more.

I remember reading a book some years ago, possibly a William Buhlman OBE dream-log where he talked about encountering Entities that often gave guidance or Psychological Help in some way (and who generally always appeared the same and would watch from a distance, more like waiting to see what he might do etc) – Though he also recounted vivid dreams with a deceased Uncle who appeared as a younger version of himself, around 20 (though who had died while much older)... and for a time interacted with William through OBE's, and that his Uncle was actually shocked about William's capability in even being able to make contact with him as he was in a Deadlands Reality/Pocket of Existence in transition to be reborn etc (from what I recall anyhow).

I think Carlos Castendea and his adventures of a similar nature in realms of sleep and OBE's also make mention of Entities that can propel one deeper into layers of dreaming, again taking forms that would appeal to him Psychologically or would claim to be Entities that exist within a Layer of Reality governed by the Psychedelic Drugs he was taking... which kinda makes me think of the Matrix in how the Red Pill acts as a Separator from one world to the next, like maybe on a purely pharmacological level your friend who took the overdose might have triggered something similar where his brain/mind temporarily hacked into a hidden layer of our world?

This also seems to be in the same space as what Mirage shared and of her vivid encounters and even life saving experience in the pool. And that specifically (the pool incident) had me remember what Nicola Tesla wrote in his auto-biography about nearly drowning and being saved by a voice/entity that gave him the correct information and directions to an air-pocket underneath the wooden building/pier where he was trapped underwater. And later claimed that such guidance came from his Alien Family, whom he considered both real and non-human, though perhaps existing in another reality as opposed to what me might think of as Alien beings from Space etc.

I would honestly assume most people have had a vivid dream encounters at one time or another, either brought on by instances of stress or need, though perhaps even simply at random with such being controlled by the stars themselves... who knows, Consciousness is deliciously complex, that I believe for sure. And so perhaps most encounters could just be aspects of our own Brain/Awareness operating autonomously and giving us the illusion/projection of a separate Entity? And how might it do this...? Well... I have no fraking idea. But perhaps it could be something similar to how Quantum Computers Operate and their ability to appear as the required data-set only when we look for it... or when we really need it.

I think, like mirage, that the guy you've mentioned received help in the form of a visit from a guiding spirit.

Your dreams about "so-called-strangers" like your son or brother could have been, like mirage has insinuated in the end of her first response, rewritten and redirected memories from other lives, perhaps even from parallel realities, though I'm not sure I believe in parallel realities.

It is very true that visitations from a guiding spirit at a crucial time can supply enough love and energy to go through for the rest of one's life.

I can believe in alternate realities. LK mentions the quantum computer which essentially uses quantum physics rather than the typical binary (I'm too tired to try to explain it), and using that it makes alternate calculations and deductions simultaneously at ridiculous speeds, and it's apparently a manifestation of some really bizarre physics (like one person said, the universe isn't just stranger than you imagine, it's stranger than you CAN imagine). As above, so below thinking, I can see multiple lives working simultaneously in the same way, a type of learning program of the universe that isn't so much set on us as individuals but rather using all of us (like a single brain uses neurons and is filled with contradictory thoughts, impulses, and notions) to...well, find out why 42 is the purpose of life.

Forgive me if I'm too surreal, I'm in a strange mood.

Mirage, thanks for sharing that! I didn't realize the relevance at first, but toward the end it made sense.

I may send him this poem I remembered recently, though he'd get something very different from it than I did, at least on a surface conscious level.

[b]A Morning Dream[b] by Li Ching Chao

This morning I dreamed I followed
Widely spaced bells, ringing in the wind,
And climbed through mists to rosy clouds.
I realized my destined affinity
With An Ch'i-sheng the ancient sage.
I met unexpectedly O Lu-hua
The heavenly maiden.

Together we saw lotus roots as big as boats.
Together we ate jujubes as huge as melons.
We were the guests of those on swaying lotus seats.
They spoke in splendid language,
Full of subtle meanings.
The argued with sharp words over paradoxes.
We drank tea brewed on living fire.

Although this might not help the Emperor to govern,
It is endless happiness.
The life of men could be like this.

Why did I have to return to my former home,
Wake up, dress, sit in meditation.
Cover my ears to shut out the disgusting racket.
My heart knows I can never see my dream come true.
At least I can remember
That world and sigh.

So she experienced it as well. And for me, the heavenly maiden, speaking in subtle languages (for me it was wordless music/songs that had more meaning than language itself could convey, and created reality, just as it perceived reality through such vibrations) that was my experiencing Freya. Among other visionary and dream episodes that I think touched a metaphysical reality beyond (or at least not normally visible to us) this one.

I recently saw an Episode of Star Trek | Voyager from Season 4 called 'Waking Moments' that reminded me of this thread...

Anyhow, I do remember seeing this back when I was a teenager and it's definitely one of the better Episodes that borders on a Matrix/Inception (Meets Nightmare on Elm Street) Plot-Line where an Alien is invading everyone's dreams, (what looks to be the same Person) and causing some of the crew to fall into a near REM-Coma sleep.

The senior staff realize they are under some type of a Psychic-Attack from another Reality but with no apparent way to combat the Invading Dreamer are left clueless as to what to do, until Chakotay makes note of the fact that his is a somewhat accomplished Lucid Dreamer (making use of his characters Indian Heritage) and suggests that they put him under so he can confront the Invader.

Eventually while dreaming (and instigating his Lucid-Mode) Chakotay does make contact with the Night Stalker and discovers they are a Race of beings that exist within a Dream Reality (which is real to them)... with this also being their main mode of combating those of the 'Waking Realities'. And so he attempts to wake up and report this to the Captain etc (and apparently does)

Meanwhile most of the crew are falling victim to the 'Sleep Virus' and are all going into a coma and it's looking pretty grim with only the Doctor (him being a Hologram) left awake. And 'Their Collective Dream' takes the form of this same Alien Race attacking Voyager and completely taking it over in a Nightmare Scenario.

Chakotay also gets trapped in a Layered Dream where he keeps thinking he is awake only to discover he is not... but finally escapes the Nightmare and before succumbing to the Coma-Version of the Collective Dream both he and the Doctor are able to Trace the Aliens to a nearby planet-system where they are all under a type of Machine-Induced Sleep that allows them to Invade Unconscious Reality.

-=-=-=-=

It's honestly a pretty damn good Episode, especially when within the Coma-Sleep Janeway and a few of the others realize they ARE dreaming, and are trying to reconcile this with the fact that they are still unable to wake up, and so seek to retake the ship in a more conventional way which leads to a few 'Neo' moments of them being confronted by the Aliens and becoming immune to their Phasers/Weapons etc...

I thought it might be relevant here, given the theme of Dream People... where such might not always be a pleasant visitation.

Check it out on Netflixs if you get the chance,

I just remembered this!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rbnBe-vXGQM

quote:
Dr. Christopher Kerr speaks at a 2015 TEDx event Buffalo, New York.

Dr. Christopher W. Kerr is the Chief Medical Officer at The Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, where he has worked since 1999. His background in research has evolved from bench science towards the human experience of illness as witnessed from the bedside, specifically patients’ dreams and visions at the end of life. Although medically ignored, these near universal experiences often provide comfort and meaning as well as insight into the life led and the death anticipated.

At 2:45 he starts to talk about working at a hospice. Many reached out and seemed to be at peace. He had a personal experience years before with his dying father that he'd forgotten about, but being surrounded by it reminded him of it.

Heh, 4:25, nurse tells him patient doesn't need med because he's seeing his deceased mother.

Many are comforted as they're dying.

Just after 6:30 he begins showing footage of a woman describing a strange, comforting dream as she was in her last days.

At 9:20, he shares of speaking with several patients up to their death to explore this more with a majority describing dreams "more real than real" and very detailed, down to smells. (These can be while awake.) These were much more common the closer to death.

Most are dead relatives and pets, but sometimes complete strangers.

About 12:20 is another video of a dying man describing visits from his deceased wife.

After the 14 minute mark one enters the hospice with horrible dreams of a past war, but it becomes better. Dead soldiers he tried to save came to him as an old man and told him they were about to come get him.

Technically, it's over by the 17:10 mark
