Well..I just can't seem to stay away from this forum. Didja miss me?

okay, now seriously..
So I was wondering if you all are aware or care or what your OpiNION was of this wall that Israel is building.

It's supposed to be to protect Israel from terrorists, obviously, but some are arguing that it's also a deliberate attempt to forever squash any hopes of an independant Palestinian state. It's my OpiNION that the only hope of ending the violence is a viable Palestinian state, short of utter genocide on the part of Israel, which may not be entirely unlikely .

This wall doesn't follow the Green Line. In fact it puts 14.5% of the West Bank on the Israeli side. It snakes around Palestinian settlements, entirely cutting off some of them from the rest of the West Bank. Forcing the residents there to enter and exit their communities through gates controlled by Israel. I find this abhorrent. Of course I also find terrorism to be stomach turning but I don't see that problem solved by creating a new one.

This wall also cuts off some communities from the land that they farm. The wall is confiscating some of the most fertile land in the West Bank. Students and employees of smaller communites will have to cross this barrier daily to get to work and school. Considering that innocent Palestinians are already killed with alarming frequency at regular border crossings, I shudder to think what this new obstacle will mean for some of them.

When first announced, the US had no objections to the wall but now that the detailed maps of where it will be built have been released, even this administration (normally staunch Israel supporters) has objections. The UN overwhelmingly passed a resolution against the wall but Israel flat out said they would ignore it.
Which is another matter..it's sickening how some countries get to pick and choose which resolutions they obey while other countries get bombed to smithereens for disobeying.

So here's the NYTimes link- http://www.nytimes.com/2003/11/12/international/middleeast/12MIDE.html?pagewanted=print&position=

I've seen reports about this wall on the news. It immediately reminded me of the Berlin Wall, though it is made from different materials. I understand people's concerns for safety, but like you, I think devisiveness only exacerbates the problems rather than solving them. When the UN Security Council voted to pass a resolution against the wall, didn't the US veto it? I may be mistaken, but I thought that is what I heard. Also like you, Harpyr, I do not understand why some countries are forced to comply through armed conflict while others seem to face no consequenses at all. I don't think I have heard that major powers are even considering sanctions over this. Perhaps one day we will all consider ourselves humans and get along as brothers instead of drawing lines in the sand and fighting to the death over them.

Fishkitten- I think that the US did veto a resolution in the Security Council but I think the General Assembly voted one in.

To what Fajita quoted- HERE HERE! I second the motion. That is the real trick isn't it?

Oxy- Thanks!

I do have more to say but I'm in the middle of reading an important chapter of a book that I want to share with everyone so I'll be back!
