Bush's popularity will soar after Iraq gets its sovereignty this month (or soon after). ------------------ "Never mentally imagine for another that which you would not want to experience for yourself, since the mental image you send out inevitably comes back to you." Rebecca Clark IP: Logged |

I'd argue against "soon after" - I've read several compelling opinions from military sources that attacks will likely intensify leading up to and immediately after handover. Although if the insurgents continue their current trend (attacking Iraqi civilians rather than troops), short-term, support will likely increase. All bets are off after that, though, if that ends-up increasing Iraqi dissent towards the US (and therefore strengthening existing or leading to burgeoning of new resistance), and, therefore, American deaths...I'm of the opinion that the above may very well lead to a strengthening of support for the "new Iraqi government" (as "ordinary Iraqis" may view the US as incapable of insuring their safety), especially if they do some minor and largely symbolic actions to show that they are independent of what quite a few Iraqis see as the "occupying force" - which, of course, would be good for us in the long run. That sounds about right. When the Iraqis taste freedom, the terrorists will lose their grassroots support. They are already beginning to make demands. ------------------ "Never mentally imagine for another that which you would not want to experience for yourself, since the mental image you send out inevitably comes back to you."
