There is a guy who is in need a computer as he could not speak and can only communicate via computer. He said he is suffering from cerebral palsy and is economically disadvantaged and contacted his local church. The church people asked us to volunteer if we had a spare computer. So I approached a friend of mine who owns a computer business. He offered me a computer. I took the computer and personally went to deliver it as I thought it would save the church shipping fees. With great difficulty I found his apartment and then I rang the door bell. After many rings, a guy came out. Very healthy looking. Then when I asked does My XX XX live here. He glanced me top to down, saw a backpack in my hand. And said, no. I asked again that I am not mistaken, and this was indeed the address I had. He denied again.

I emailed my church and they thought I goofed up. They gave me his work email and I contacted Mr X saying a guy came out and denied he was him. Mr X gave me directions on email, to the same house.

What do you make of this story. Is the guy I communicated on email and the guy whose door I knocked one and same?

My spider sense tells me they are. And guess what, this guy just lost a laptop worth $800.

Now what do I do? Should I go and hand it over to him? This happened yesterday.

Comeon Lindaland. Help me out

If I understand correctly, you're saying the guy who is allegedly disadvantaged...most likely isn't?

I'm not sure what to make of it, it's very odd. Same house, same person is the assumption?

Ummmm, if this person cannot speak, what sort of work does he do? Can you meet him at work? And if he's working, at a place that can afford to give him email, is he really so economically disadvantaged? Or is it volunteer work?

My hubby's uncle has CP... and not just mildly either. Their speech can be effected... but they can speak. CP effects your muscles. While it is possible that this fella could be suffering from multiple diseases, I seriously doubt he is mute or has CP.

Cerebral means brain and Palsy means a disorder of movement. A person who has CP has damage to their brain, primarily the part that controls motor function. How much damage varies from person to person. Mild CP would effect fine motor skills, while severe CP could mean poor movement in the entire trunk, and all for limbs... as well as the neck (which could effect swallowing). A person with severe CP isn't likely to have a job.

The person who answered the door did speak, and if he had just lost his computer, why would'nt he accept it when you went to his house?

Maybe he's testing peoples' good will.

Wait for him to contact the church again?

Is his name and address in the phone book?

Maybe the man denied he was Mr. X because you saw him healthy and he was probably expecting it to be sent via mail. Foul play?

Would his work e mail address indicate where he worked? Or was that a private address?

Maybe Mr. X was'nt his real name, and the person who answered the door didn't know what he was up to. Perhaps he planned on it being shipped.

The director of church used to chat with him sharing Gods words (specially taking her 30 minutes of time with him once a week). I wonder what she must be feeling after 4 months of doing this.

This lady mentioned to Mr X that someone would deliver a used desktop to your home.
May be when he checked me out he saw a backpack and realized this is not the computer delivery man.

By the way, the phone number of the person has changed from published to unpublished.

His email is not personal. Its edisonnj.com

I am beginning to think that people are indeed taking advantage. What a time we live in. Holy Moly.

Find a way to identify that person before you give him the computer.
You might have goofed up. He might be a liar.
Keep us posted.
Good luck!

Thanks Tril, LS, Phil, and Yin.

I shall keep you all posted. I am meeting the director on Sunday.

BTW, the apartment were townhouses. The door was partially opened. I peeped in. I noticed a treadmill on the sides.

I looked up the e mail address www.edisonnj.com
It doesn't look like they would be lacking in money to give a disabled person a computer!

This is what I found :

All disabled people are impaired, and all handicapped people are disabled, but a person can be impaired and not necessarily be disabled, and a person can be disabled without being handicapped.

Its gotten me.

My dad's legally blind too. He lost his license almost 3 years ago (thank God/dess). I was really starting to get scared with him driving around... especially at night.

Guess what. I did go to the right address. And there were 2 guys living at the same house. One was mentally challenged and the other was the guy I was supposed to meet.
His legs are indeed quiet distorted and he couldn't speak for a long time.

I had met the former that day. It seems these people live together in group homes and there usually is a social services guy with them.

By your emails, you all seem to indicate to keep hope alive in goodness of people

Appreciate your inputs.

Peace.
