Against. For many, I believe it to be the easy way out. They don't have to pay for what they've done in prison for long. Wesley Allen Dodd, for instance (a child rapist/murderer from the PNW in the late 80s/early 90s) He was put up in solitary confinement for his own safety and his death sentence was moved up upon his request. He knew if he would be terrorized (which he very well deserved, IMO)by the other inmates if he tried to socialize and live within the prison normally. I believe for many of these people going up against Capitol Punishment are getting off to easy. There is also always that *what if* factor. What if they really didn't do it? What if they are innocent? How many innocent people have been put to death in the past? Its too fallible. I'm also against TVs, computers, and anything enjoyable in prisons. I think they have too many privileges. If we took away the miscellaneous fun time things, we might be able to spend more money on rehablilitation... psychotherapy, vocational training, maybe improved social skills lessons. The justice system/prison system is hugely flawed IMO. There could be a lot done to improve upon it.

I agree with you. I used to be hardcore for the death penalty, even when used on minors who commit violent crimes. I did a small research paper on the subject, and was shocked by how many possibly innocent people have been put death in the past. I don't recall the exact number of highly questionable exectuions, but it was high enough to completly change my perspective.I now believe that living out the rest of your pitiful existence in jail will make the guilty suffer more than just putting them out. That also leaves the chance that someday they may be proved innocent (if they are). I understand that also leaves the opportunity for a guilty person to be let off later on, but I'm willing to risk that if it means sparing an innocent life. The prison system is in my eyes to accomadating. California is the PRISON state, truly. Sigh. I recently heard about some prisoners rioting because they had their gym time cut down. The local female prision has a high number of inmates getting pregnant while serving a sentence in jail?!! Sigh, Sigh, Sigh. Yup, some strict reform system is over due. IP: Logged |

I used to be hard core against the death penalty....for many reasons, not the least of which included the innocent that were put to death before they could be cleared. But, there are exceptions to that. Pedophiles and most rapists cannot be rehabilitated. The recidevism rates are all in the 90's or higher %. I think pedophiles, and child abusers should be either put to death...slowly, or put in a prison with each other for company. No tv...no recreation...no air conditioning...beans and bread and water....hard hard labor...rapists and other abusers can go too..those that abuse their spouse or partners or parents, etc....they can all go...and no short term sentences...I'm talking forever...they cannot be rehabilitated...the stats for rehabilitation are so low and so short term there really is no sense in it..waste of time and money.IP: Logged |

i'm against the death penalty in the vast majority of cases but there are rare exceptions...i agree SC...the recent case in florida where 9 year old jessica lunsford was raped for 3 days then buried alive is a good example..... i would also support the execution of saddam hussein as long as they string up his accomplices with him (like bush sr. hehee) IP: Logged | |
