The usual frustration of the poor and disenfranchised plus a nice dose of culture clash thrown in for good measure. I'm not impressed. They'll do nothing for their cause but affirm their bad image. They need a PR director. Badly.Sound and fury signifying nothin' How does it make you feel, prox? IP: Logged |

yup I'm overwhelmed sometimes with a sense of frustration and sadness, like watching something spin out of control and there's no way to stop it.
I'd root for the good guys( maybe even more than root) , but I'm not sure I can find any. IP: Logged |

To be super-duper Devil's Advocate, I could wonder if crises such as this have been orchestrated in order to make people feel overwhelmed and depressed, thereby paving the way for some mighty Savior to take control of their lives (at the expense of their freedoms). (I was actually mulling this over while cleaning the bathroom...might've been the bleach.)But I'm also more inclined to think that conspiracies are another way of making a world that seems capricious in its actions and cruelties appear to make more sense than any other cursory investigation would allow. I'm just tickled pink to know I'm not the only one out there thinking those types of thoughts while scubbing the toilet. IP: Logged |

mmmm..Prox..sadly, I'm thinking this is quite often the case. More often than we would like to think....the poor must be kept in their place and sometimes decreased in number...the working class must know their place and hold a certain amount of fear inside...we should be certain that we are not bright enough, capable enough, strong enough...we need those in power to care for us, protect us from the big bad whatever out there. Unfortunately, I fear our "protectors" are the ones with their teeth at our throats. wanders off with scrubbing bubbles in hand IP: Logged |

I was watching Foreign Exchange with Fareed Zakaria on PBS the a week or so ago and he was talking about the guest worker program that the Bush administration is pushing. He said that it would be opening the door to possibly seeing the sort of thing that happened in France repeated here. He said to allow large populations of people who work in the US who have no allegience to the country would be dangerous because they would have more reason to be disgruntled and quicker to riot... and that it was France's guest worker program that is in part to blame for what is going on with the rioting. I admittedly have read very little with regard to immigration issues and guest worker programs but I thought what he said was interesting and made me reconsider what I initially thought *might* not be a bad idea. Now it doesn't sound like such a good idea.. Any thoughts?IP: Logged |

I think he makes a good point. I find it hard to imagine that the vast majority of illegal immigrants feel any allegiance to the US. Granted, I know of only only two illegal immigrants. (two very nice men from Honduras working in a restaurant kitchen a friend manages. completely uninterested in being an American, just interested in sending money back home to their families)I can't help but notice how differently the recent riots over job security vs. the ones prox brought up are played out so differently by the media. 35 hr work week, 6 weeks paid leave, life-long job security. Yeah, ok. IP: Logged |
