Campaign Action: Demand Action Over Indonesian Forest Fires http://www.saveourearth.co.uk/soe_sign_action.php?id=9

Submitted by Save Our Earth
Started on 17/08/2005

Another year passes and there are more forest fires in Indonesia. These fires are deliberately started by farmers to increase their yield, or by loggers and miners clearing the forest.

Malaysia has reported hazardous pollution levels - the API or Air Pollution Index above 300 is hazardous and above 500 triggers a state of emergency - in Kula Selangor, the API was 531!

The forests of Indonesia are the third largest outside South America and home to ecologically sensitive plants, unknown species of animals and plants and to indigenous tribes people.

Despite Malaysia sending firemen to help quell the flames, action must be taken against Indonesia's lack of action to prevent another year of fires.

As Indonesia ratified the Kyoto Protocol on 28th June 2004, they are bound by their carbon dioxide emissions and with stored carbon being released as carbon dioxide from every fire, they will be unable to meet their target emission levels. They will have to buy the carbon credits using loans from other countries - Indonesia will plunge further into debt with only their rainforests to sell to the Western nations to reduce their debt.

Yet this can be solved. We are calling on :

Kofi Anaan, UN Secretary General, to intervene to save these magnificient forests by asking UNEP (United Nations Environmental Programme) to study the causes of these fires, and to promote agricultural education and land re-use amongst farmers.

Indonesia to take tougher action against illegal logging and to call for foreign investment from Western nations to help protect Indonesia's forests. For Indonesia to promote sustainable farming methods where farmers work with the forests.

The International Community to prevent this hazardous and lethal pollution from crossing borders, by pledging investment to protect the forests and to recognise Indonesia as a 'guardian of one of the great ecosystems' in the World.

As part of our continuing Rainforest campaign, we are writing to World leaders once again.

We are calling for urgent action to save the World's Rainforests from illegal logging, ranching and the soya industry. As each day ends, we are getting closer to the Point of No Return where the Rainforest ecosystem will break down, and will release years of stored carbon into the atmosphere, accelerating Global Warming beyond limits that life can endure on Earth.

We must congratulate the African nations that have been working together to protect Africa's rainforests, but we, the people of the Earth must call for much needed intervention by the Developed Nations to safeguard the Earth of tomorrow.

There has been too much talk from these nations whether in promising to look into the issue or by increasing financial aid. These Nations are:

Demanding a supply of tropical hardwood for luxury items which is leading to financial incentives with illegal logging.

Demanding cheaper cattle feed which is leading to increase Soya production.

Demanding cheaper beef for the food industry which is increasing the size of slash-and-burn areas set aside for ranching.

This must stop, and these Nations must work with others to actively seek more sustainable farming practices and sustainable wood materials - we have been warned many times in the past, and as we head further into the 21st Century, we must work together to maintain our existence and all of life on Earth.

Please sign this campaign and add your voice of concern to World leaders to call an end to the destruction of the remaining Tropical Rainforests.
By signing this action, you will become a member of Save Our Earth

SAVE THE STYX VALLEY in Tasmania(,ACTION) September 18, 2005 3:30 PM

Richard Denver and Vanessa Tyrer visited the Styx Valley in Tasmania, and they were devastated by what they saw. They saw their government was allowing precious old growth forests to be turned into piles of woodchip, instead of being preserved for future generations. Please support their campaign by taking the pledge.....more

What we are trying to achieve

Hi, and welcome to the old growth forest action page. We want to make the public aware of the catastrophic rates at which old growth forests are being destroyed around the world and particularly in the Styx Valley in Tasmania.

Like many people around the world who are concerned about preserving our environment, we believe that governments should be looking after our precious old growth forests rather than allowing them to be turned into piles of woodchip. Currently, woodchip from Australia is shipped to Asian countries where it is used to make cardboard boxes and paper. We believe that this is an appalling outcome for trees which have taken centuries to grow, and that there is much greater value in their preservation.

We wish to enable future generations to enjoy and respect the beauty of these old growth forests. If you feel this way, we are asking you to assist us by helping us to inform our politicians and tourism bodies.

Take the Pledge to save Tasmania's old growth forests

The concept of the pledge is to make the government and Tourism Tasmanian aware of the number of people who would visit Tasmania if the destruction of The Styx Valley ceased. We hope that this will encourage the Tasmanian government to see the economic value of saving these forests and to invest money into developing tourism, rather than allowing their unique natural resources to be destroyed.

Send a letter to the politicians

As we know, politicians are the ones who make many of the decisions in this country. They believe they know what is best for Australia, its environment and its people. However, we need to keep them informed of our views and interests so that they can make better decisions in the future. A prewritten letter has been created so that you can send it to the politicians listed. You may modify the letter and add your own comments or simply fill in your name, country and email address and hit the submit button.

Discuss the issues on Envirotalk

Envirotalk is a discussion forum designed to allow you to discuss issues relating to the environment. If you have a comment or are looking for information click the link to our public forum to view previous posts and discuss issues with hundreds of members. If you wish to become a member just click the Register link. Its free, and you can enter all the forums on the site and add your comments.

How you can help our old growth forests at home and in the work place

There are always ways to help prevent the demand of paper and cardboard and in turn help prevent old growth forests around the world from being destroyed. These are just a few of the things you can do in your work place or at home to help.

Buy recycled toilet paper
Buy recycled paper bags
Buy recycled cardboard
Buy recycled paper and note books
When printing a draft use both sides of the paper
Recycle your paper and cardboard
Place a no junk mail sticker on your letter box
Use newspaper, recycled wrapping paper, a recycled gift box or bag for wrapping gifts
Check the news online rather than buying a newspaper
Try to avoid products with excessive packaging

Preserve the Unique Treasures of the Ironwood Forest
http://ga1.org/campaign/ironwood/step1.tcl

The 129,000 acre Ironwood Forest National Monument is but one unit of the 26 million acre National Landscape Conservation System, which recognizes and protects the best of the lands and waters managed by the Bureau of Land Management. This southern Arizona Monument is special for a variety of reasons. Large stands of Ironwoods still thrive in the Monument; the largest trees grow along the bottom of washes and in the early summer the Desert Ironwood bursts into bloom with fragrant lavender-purple and white flowers.

Some Ironwoods live in excess of 800 years, and in their lifetime they support a host of other plants and animals. For example, the old limbs of the tree create tangles of brush which provide protection and shade for rabbits, kangaroo rats, coyotes, kit foxes and a variety of birds and reptiles. Dense canopy provides shelter for nesting white-winged doves and roosting sites for hawks and owls.

The tree provides protection for young saguaro cacti, burrows for tortoises, and protection against sunburn for unique species such as the night blooming cereus. In short, Ironwoods function as oases of fertile and sheltered habitat within a harsh and challenging desert landscape.

**Rugged Mountains, Diverse Wildlife
Besides its unique namesake tree, Ironwood Forest National Monument also includes rugged mountains like the Silver Bells, and possibly the last viable population of desert bighorn sheep indigenous to the Tucson Basin. In addition, the area is historic and potential habitat for the cactus ferruginous pygmy owl, and is home to the lesser long-nosed bat and the desert tortoise, as well as numerous hawks and other wildlife.

**Archaeological Importance
More than 200 sites from the prehistoric Hohokam period (600 BCE to 1450 CE) have been recorded in the area. The archeological artifacts include chipped stone, plain and decorated ceramics and worked shell from the Gulf of California. An unusually large number of petroglyphs have been recorded in the Silverbell Mountains, in addition to a dazzling array of complex pictograph sites. Ruins of an extensive Hohokam village highlight the monument's archeological value.

Three areas within the monument are listed on the National Register of Historic Places: the Cocoraque Butte Archeological District (considered a traditional cultural place by the Tohono O'odham and Hopi Indian tribes); the Lost Robles Archeological District; and the Mission of Santa Ana del Chiquiburitac (the last mission constructed in Pimeria Alta).

**Facing Unique Challenges
Ironwood Forest National Monument faces unique challenges due to its close proximity to a large urban population -- approximately 25,000 people live within 20 minutes of the monument, plus several hundred thousand living less than an hour away in Tucson. In recent years, the Monument has experienced increasing problems of illegal off-road vehicle use, encroaching development, and the growing effects of cross-border smuggling activity. A wise and well thought out resource management plan is needed to ensure that the area can be enjoyed by future generations while maintaining its unique characteristics.

PROTECT VALLE VIDAL AREA - NEW MEXICO

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
Download Forest Service documents at: www.fs.fed.us/r3/carson/plans/index.shtml

TALKING POINTS:
"The Vision" for the Valle Vidal that as it is written on page 3 of the Forest Service's Proposed Action, does not reflect my vision for the Valle Vidal. I want to see the Valle Vidal's "unique combination of wild land resources" - habitat, range, fish, wildlife, riparian and watershed resources - "restored and improved" across the board, NOT simply "maintained or sustained."

My vision for the Valle Vidal requires that the Forest Service establish a management framework that incorporates the common sense principle that it is easier to prevent harm to the land than to attempt to repair it later. Preventing devastating impacts, like those of coalbed methane development, is the only way that the Valle Vidal can truly be restored and improved.

The Forest Service should permanently close the entire Valle Vidal to energy leasing and development. The Valle Vidal should be protected for the benefit of sportsmen, ranchers, outfitters and guides, local business, outdoor enthusiasts, wildlife enthusiasts, Boy Scouts, future generations, and the public at large.

The Forest Service should put the entire Valle Vidal off limits to oil and gas leasing NOW, in the Forest Plan Amendment stage. They should NOT defer this decision to a future analysis of leasing. If the Forest Service believes this area should be protected, then it has the authority to "say no" now and not waste taxpayer dollars on a leasing analysis.

TAKE ACTION NOW -- VALLE VIDAL SCOPING COMMENTS

Tell the Forest Service to Protect New Mexico's Valle Vidal: DEADLINE - September 14th
http://www.vallevidal.org/urgent.html

On June 14, 2005, the U.S. Forest Service began a formal process that will ultimately determine whether or not the eastern half of the Valle Vidal will be leased for coalbed methane development. The first step in this process is the preparation of a Forest Plan Amendment to incorporate the Valle Vidal Unit into the Carson National Forest's overall Forest Plan. That Forest Plan Amendment will establish a specific vision for the Valle Vidal, and set out certain "management highlights," and standards and guidelines.

The Carson National Forest is accepting public comments on this Forest Plan Amendment now through September 14, 2005. Speak up today to ensure that the Valle Vidal is not slated for energy development!

WHAT TO DO:
Send your comments to the Forest Service by September 14, 2005, urging the agency to protect the Valle Vidal by closing the entire area to energy leasing and development.

WE HAVE PROVIDED BELOW:
Background Information
Talking Points
A Sample Letter
Key Address Infomation

If at all possible, please write your own, original comments that incorporate the talking points below. Original comments are the most effective way to make your voice heard in this Forest Service planning process. If you cannot write your own comments by the deadline, please use the sample letter. You must provide your name and address for your comments to count.

SUBJECT:Valle Vidal Forest Plan Amendment

Mr. Martin D. Chavez Jr., Forest Supervisor
Carson National Forest
Attn: Valle Vidal Forest Plan Amendment
208 Cruz Alta Road
Taos, NM 87571

Dear Mr. Chavez,

I am writing to comment on the Carson National Forest's Proposed Forest Plan Amendment for the Valle Vidal, or Management Area 21.

The Valle Vidal Unit is a tremendously unique portion of America's public land. As a public landowner and user, I value the Valle Vidal's abundant and broad range of wildlife, the area's clean riparian and water resources, and its vast array of recreational, sporting and agricultural opportunities.

(Try to provide a description and personal example of what you value about the Valle Vidal, or if you have not yet been there, the opportunities it affords to you as a public land user. This can be an example of wildlife viewing or hunting, or any other recreational, agricultural, educational or ecological that is present in the Valle Vidal.)

The Forest Service's Proposed Action outlines a vision for the Valle Vidal that includes maintaining and sustaining the Valle Vidal's array of natural and recreational resources. I strongly encourage the Forest Service to raise the expectation for itself as it seeks to successfully manage this ecosystem. The Valle Vidal's habitat, range, fish, wildlife, riparian and watershed resources must not simply be maintained or sustained, they must be restored and improved across the board. Furthermore, to restore and improve the Valle Vidal to meet this vision, the Forest Service should establish an Adaptive Ecosystem Management framework that, at its heart, reflects the common sense principle that it is easier to prevent harm to the land than to attempt to repair it later.

Critically, in order to restore and improve the Valle Vidal's resources the Forest Service must close the entire Valle Vidal unit to energy leasing and development now. I urge you not defer this decision to a future leasing analysis. The air, water, and soil impacts of energy leasing and development is clearly incompatible with the many uses of the Valle Vidal and will severely limit our public land managers ability to restore and improve the Valle Vidal resources.

Work Some Magic for Canada's Boreal Forest http://action.nwf.org/campaign/gogreen20050617?source=action_index

Vast stretches of Canada's boreal forest are undisturbed by development, but they are not quiet. Every spring, they ring with the song of billions of birds. Thirty percent of North America's songbirds and 40 percent of its waterfowl migrate to the boreal to rear their young. They come here because the forest offers wilderness on a grand scale: here they find vast woods in which to build nests. Woodpeckers build theirs in burned snags. Cape May warblers like the dark crowns of mature spruce trees. Yellow warblers, on the other hand, prefer bright green saplings and leafy bushes. They and almost 230 other species of land birds find what they need in the boreal forest.

NRDC has joined other environmental groups and indigenous communities in an urgent campaign to save this pristine forest region. Staving off industrial development may hang on an ambitious proposal that would create a United Nations World Heritage Site within the heart of the boreal. Encompassing 10.6 million acres in Manitoba and Ontario, the site would include two provincial parks in addition to the traditional territories of involved First Nations. The Canadian government, and more recently the Manitoba government, have endorsed this visionary proposal, but in the meantime the Manitoba government is delaying protection for traditional First Nations territories within the boreal. Without this protection, the proposed World Heritage Site may be sacrificed before conservation planning can be completed.
