July 14, 2006 Canadian and Afghan forces engage Taliban in firefight Over July 8-9, coalition and Afghan forces launched an offensive against the Taliban in Zjarev district, 25 km west of Kandahar. The offensive, coined operation Zahar, was initiated after locals supplied information that the Taliban had emerged in the area. According to Canadian Forces L.Col. Ian Hope, coalition forces were able to quickly move on the information, gaining the element of surprise. A video filmed by Master Cpl. Ronald Duchesne, from Canada’s military combat camera unit, shows Canadian and Afghan forces engaging the Taliban in a firefight.A later statement by Colonel Ahmad of the Afghan National Army, said 21 Taliban were killed, 20 were seriously injured and 6 were captured, two of which were labeled as major Taliban commanders. One Canadian died in Operation Zahar, one Canadian was injured and one Afghan soldier was injured. Cpl. Anthony Boneca, a reservist, died when he was shot by a Taliban gunman, hitting him just above his bullet-proof vest. http://www.ogrish.com/archives/2006/july/ogrish-dot-com-canadian_and_afghan_forces_engage_taliban.wmv
