My mom told me tonight (it's my mom's birthday) that my little sister may not be allowed to re-enlist for more active duty in the Navy, which also apparently means she won't get the GI Bill either.

The story as far as I've heard is that she enlisted under some program where the goal was to replenish the Reserves or something, so they're kind of forcing her out after just two years in service. To clarify, she knew her term to be two years, but she'd always planned on doing at least 4 years. It's a surprise that she's not being allowed to (especially considering that part of her two years was at IT school). She's requested to re-up. She's had her ex-Commander recommend her for it before he left. I guess it doesn't look good at this point.

Seems odd...

It could be one of a number of things - they may have too many people in the service right now doing her particular job, or maybe they want to reduce the number of reserves and sign people up for regular service, who knows.

If she's really keen to re-up and the Navy won't "let" her (which, to be honest, something about that doesn't quite sound right - never heard of someone not being allowed to reup in a time of conflict), why doesn't she join another branch? The Air Force is cush compared to the Navy.

I totally agree on the Air Force thing (and I did tell her to go into that branch prior to her enlisting at all). I also agree that it sounds very unusual that they'd not allow someone to re-enlist, especially in a high-tech job. Also, I would think that they'd love a reservist to re-enlist to active duty, wouldn't they?... so they should just let her stay if she likes.

I'm not sure if the Air Force allows prior service from another branch. That's one of those rules that's different for each branch. When I was in the Navy, we allowed prior service from different branches, but I'm pretty certain that not all of them do.

Ya, I've known Army guys to join the Navy, and Navy guys to join the Marines, but never heard about any exchange btwn other services and the Air Force. But if I were her I would still look into it if she's really keen to stay in the service. My brother is in the AF, he's told me that they've been stop gapping tech people since the war in Iraq, so they must have a need.

Someone from the Navy can join the Marines (since they are in the same division) but I am not sure about the Air Force. We do have Soldiers from here (Fort H) that have joined the AF through Davis Monthan, but I don't know if they accept Navy.

It does seem odd that they won't accept her, yet Isis is right, if her MOS is full, they won't add additional service people. The Army will take her if they have an opening in the MOS and she meets the standards- but the Army is a bit more rough and tumble (then again, you should see some of the peeps they have accepted).

It does seem odd though that they don't want her if she is willing to change her MOS and if she meets their requirements. If she has had a few "dings" in her record or if someone has decided she is not up to par, they will block her from re-up'ing.

I'd ask Bear, but he's asleep right now. He'll probably pop on later.

My sis is an Aquarius, so there's a possibility of trouble, though I don't think she's likely done anything wrong. She didn't join straight out of high school. She joined in her early 20's like I did, so there's not as much of the immaturity factor. I think she's been dating the same guy throughout as well, which I would hope would lend some stability.

She's an IT, which is similar to the civilian designation for the same moniker. (I think IT may have absorbed Radiomen, too.) It's a fairly high-tech job, and requires a security clearance. She did enlist her commanding officer in trying to stay in, but apparently his letter fell on deaf ears or something (and then the officer got transferred).

Right now she's planning for getting out, and moving in with my other younger sister (Aries).

Navy/Air Force Jobs Conversion Chart http://usmilitary.about.com/od/joiningthemilitary/l/blnavjobconver.htm

******

Yes, you can transfer from the Navy to the Air Force, though I do believe that you lose rank by doing so just as you lose rank when changing from reservist to active duty ... but in her case, where both those apply, she'd still only lose one stripe. If she's active reserve though she won't lose rank. My hubby says that if she's an E5 right now it might be hard for her to make it into the Air Force because they have too many E4's which she would be if she is not currently active reserve. If she is active reserve and is not an E4 she should have a pretty good chance.

Hope that makes sense. Sorry, I'm in a rush making dinner. I'll be back on later tonight.
