ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - A woman and her roommate were charged with starving the woman's 9-year-old daughter, who weighed just 42 pounds when she was found, was locked up all day and was forced to wear a filthy diaper, authorities said. Melissa Samoraj, 27, and Raymond LaFountain, 31, were arrested Wednesday and charged with aggravated child abuse. The girl was so emaciated that her spine and ribcage were showing when state child welfare officials took her June 30, police said. The girl also had her hands bound behind her, was locked in a bedroom all day and wore a diaper that went unchanged for hours, officials said. She told police it was punishment for bad behavior. "It's a very disturbing case," police Detective Joe DeLuca said. "You see very few like this." The girl now lives with her grandparents and has gained about 25 pounds in a month. "She's doing well now," DeLuca said. LaFountain's mother reported the girl's appearance after visiting the home, DeLuca said. It's not clear how long the alleged abuse had been going on, police said. Samoraj and LaFountain were in a Pinellas County jail Thursday, each held on a $50,000 bond. DeLuca said they did not address the allegations when they were arrested Wednesday, and jail records did not indicate if they had lawyers. LaFountain was originally described by police as Samoraj's live-in boyfriend, but the gender classification at the jail was changed from male to female following a routine strip search, Pinellas sheriff's spokesman Mac McMullen said. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060803/ap_on_re_us/starved_girl;_ylt=AgwD27CIOZzaV9J9YCDq1INI2ocA;_ylu=X3oDMTA5aHJvMDdwBHNlYwN5bmNhdA-- ******
I'm one of those people that gets upset about too much government interference in people's personal lives ... but then I read about things like this and I wonder what it would be like without people to get involved on behalf of children like these. Stories like this haunt me just like that novel, "A Child Called It". It's just inhuman the way some people treat their children. ------------------ "To learn is to live, to study is to grow, and growth is the measurement of life. Eleanor.....It's hard to believe horrible things like this go on today....and it makes my heart ache....*sigh* It is however, heartening to know that the girl was found in time and is doing well now... It's a scary world out there...all kinds of dangerous creatures running around out there.... ------------------ We need to listen to our own song, and share it with others, but not force it on them. Disgusting!I'm reading a Child Called It at the moment actually. I've read it lots of times and everytime it shocks me. I can't imagine how someone would do that to their own child. IP: Logged |

Unfortunately, these child abuse cases happen on a daily basis. Not all of them are reported.IP: Logged |

Man, if that doesn't make a person feel a lethal rage in their belly, they're just not wired right. IP: Logged |

Look at that dumb ***** who drowned her children. She was let go and found not guilty.
Many social workers don't complain when they see abuse taking place.
Kids have even been adopted to people who are known to abuse children.
This country really is turning into **** .
And of course like always.....the kids pay for it. IP: Logged |

Mom bids her slain tot farewellBY NICOLE BODE DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER Ulises Sejio (bending) helps daughter Deshyn, 1, put flowers on coffin of Sharllene Morillo. A distraught Bronx mom who has been on suicide watch since her boyfriend allegedly beat her 2-year-old daughter to death was allowed to say a final goodbye at the hospital. Doctors allowed the body of 2-year-old Sharllene Morillo to be brought to Montefiore Medical Center Wednesday morning because mother Karen Mejia couldn't leave the hospital. Mejia's boyfriend, Paul Tejada-Jimenez, 29, allegedly beat the girl to death last week. He told police he shook the girl and dropped her on her head, cops said. "This was a tragic loss for her and this is something we did to help her," said Sharon Butler, spokeswoman for Montefiore Hospital. Following the private viewing around 10:30 a.m., Sharllene's body was taken to the McKeon Funeral Home home for a Wednesday night wake and a 9 a.m. service yesterday. Two dozen friends and family gathered at the funeral home to pay their final respects, before moving to Woodlawn Cemetery to watch the tiny white coffin be lowered into the ground. "Everyone loved that little girl," said family friend Ulises Sejio, 60. Tejada-Jimenez has been charged with child endangerment, which could be upgraded to homicide during his appearance in Bronx Criminal Court today. Critics see the death as a sign of failure for the chain of service providers, healthcare workers and city caseworkers that cared for Sharllene. The mayor has called for an explanation from the Administration for Children's Services, which investigated the home twice but could not substantiate claims of abuse. That creepy maggot lawyer Joel Stienberg, who killed his beautiful little daughter Lisa, comes to mind when remembering abusive parents like that...*Sigh* She was such a cute little thing...and smart too... He's a monster! Does anyone remember him? He also beat the hell out of his "girlfriend," Hedda... The guy went to jail...served two thirds of his time, and is now out.... He should still be there....forever and ever...until he dies and goes to hell... (didn't mean to get over emotional..*sigh*) IP: Logged |
