[Directed at the forum in general]Should a Moderator immediately lock threads as soon as they're posted, so that discussion can never happen? Everyone gets to post their topic, and have their say on it, but no one else can comment on it thereby ensuring that no one gets offended. Should there be two areas: Democrat & Republican? Should politics go away? IP: Logged |

No. No. And No.edit: IMO Mystic Melody has the right idea: quote: Be open minded that YOU could be the one with the misconception, OR the OTHER PERSON could be the one with the misconception, as it is difficult to tell whose government propaganda is in operation for each subject.Communicate with the intention of enlightening each other to the different messages and opinions promoted by each country and instead of assuming either side KNOWS the truth, treat the conversation as a SEARCH FOR THE TRUTH.

I would like ... and I don't mean isolated to just GU, or LL ... No Politics." Politics, n:[ Poly "many" + tics "blood sucking parasites".]" ~ Larry Hardimann " A politician is a fellow who will lay down YOUR life for HIS country." ~ Texas Guinan " It is not in the nature of politics that the best man should be elected. The best men do not want to govern their fellow men." ~ George E. MacDonald ... and my favorite... well one of my favorites ... GU was made for political discussions gemstone. It has been since the inception and came about because politics started to bleed into Astrology and FFA. To shut it down or to mute our free speech into some kind of big love fest is to deny people their right to voice their opinions. It would be like Christian fundamentalists shutting down Universal Codes because it sounds like the devils system for reading the future. People don't have to come into this forum. Just like many don't go into Heathcliffs Forum, but it would pretty damn rude to be someone that rarely visits the Pet forum and then tell them to shut it down because ya don't like cats. I vote to leave things as they are- no locking threads so no one can have a say (there goes free speec) and no pulling politics out. Politics and debate exist in the free world and should be reflected here. All views, Conservative, Liberal and Independent. That's my two cents. IP: Logged |

I like Mystic Melody's idea the best. I especially like this part of it: quote: Communicate with the intention of enlightening each other to the different messages and opinions promoted by each country and instead of assuming either side KNOWS the truth, treat the conversation as a SEARCH FOR THE TRUTH.

If I may give a suggestion. I think that there should be stricter regulations on the conduct of posters here at LL like there are on most other forum sites. I think that personal attacks on other posters in any way should not be allowed. What is tolerated here at LL amounts to verbal abuse in many cases and there just is nothing else it can be called because any personal attack on another person is verbal abuse. Verbal abuse is NOT free speech. No one is free to verbally abuse another person. Because as the saying goes, where my nose begins your rights end. IP: Logged |

One thing I've learned, is never to speak a disparaging word about anything Islam, even the ideologies behind the extremism. That is a big big no no. Completely off limits for discussion. IP: Logged |

Hey, if we're voting for rules around here, a great one would be no personal attacks or verbal abuse regarding anyone's character, personality or private life not just those who post here.Wouldn't it be great if we could just stick with the issues, the policies, the decisions, etc? After all, on the very homepage of this site it says quote: Linda loved debate, so in her memory we do encourage debates. You are free to speak your Minds about anything, but please, use no profanity or personal insults.
and not just "don't personally insult each other" alone. That would be lovely.

I fall to the left with some of my beliefs in politics sometimes. jwhop and I have had some pretty heated disucssions ourselves and been adamantly opposed to the other one's views but I can't recall ever being personally attacked or verbally abused by him and I'm sure he'd say the same about me." jwhop posted August 27, 2006 12:56 PM "Eleanore, of course we can have reasonable discussion of issues, even when we disagree. First, you are a reasonable person with well thought out positions which you lay out clearly and I can see exactly where you're coming from. You have never loaded up your comments with libelous, slanderous accusations and we can have the polite, reasonable discussion of issues for which the GU forum was intended. There are others on different sides of issues for which the same is true. We can disagree without the heat. Mainly because I perceive them...and they have proven to be, people of good will who are honestly, if passionately discussing issues about which they feel strongly." IP: Logged |

Pidaua ~ I know... I was giving my view as 'in general'. I understand that, even though the saying goes that politics and religon are topics best to avoid making small talk, as long as they exist, they will be topics of discussion... I did not intend to send any kind of censorship of GU messege... free speech is a great thing, in my opinion The light-heartedness of Mysticaldreams post was the energy I responded to and with. Sorry, for any confusion. ~ geminstone IP: Logged |
