Cyber-bullies object of crackdown in Superior schools

1/19/2007

Schools have a new breed of online predators to watch out for…cyber-bullies. Danielle Kaeding reports on the grief being caused by the online offenders in Superior.

Pushing and shoving in the halls may be typical of some school bullies. But Superior Middle School Principal Rick Flaherty says complaints from students about bullying aren’t taking place at school—it’s happening online. Flaherty says kids are harassing each other via myspace, so they’ve blocked out the site at school. “Kids are stating I’m mad at you, you know, you need to watch your back, we’re going to get you—just general threats. Some of the same things they may have said face to face at one point, but they’re finding a different medium to share that information.” Superior High School students Lydia Payton and Buck Smith aren’t oblivious to kids talking behind each others’ backs. LP: “Like writing bad messages and stuff and like writing bad comments and stuff on my pictures.” BS: “It’s fun though because everybody talks **** to everybody whether it’s to their face or on myspace or anyway. I mean you can walk through the mall in any town and see any high school student talking **** , and they’re fine the next day. Even if they’re enemies beforehand, they’re fine afterwards.” Yet, Superior High School Counselor Scott Bruce says some students take it seriously. “Next thing you know, rumors are flying around the high school as a result. I’ve had kids in tears in my office because of stuff that’s out there amongst the students that originated on myspace.” A PTA meeting is scheduled to be held at the Superior Middle School to provide information to parents about the website. The meeting will be held on January 31 at 6:00 p.m.

My opinion is such people need to be hunted down and held responsible for all their actions. Just a few months ago a boy committed suicide because on bully was harassing him on myspace. And this continues well after the high school level. In my opinion not only should such people have their networking privledges totally removed but also be subjected to some kind of counseling and probation the way that those breaking a restraining order are.

I'm not sure what the situation was but the boy was bullying him in school and then continuing in myspace plus its easy to find people once they change their name because of their buddy list.

Myspace ...
You can set your profile to private, can't you? So that way no one can post anything on your site. And you can always just delete any messages you get without reading them. And if you do read something nasty, you can flag your messages as spam or report them as abuse.
So what's the big deal?
Seriously.
I'm not saying it's right that people do things like that but there are logical ways to handle them.
Sometimes I think it just comes down to people, young and old, putting too much value on what other people think or say about them. Blame parents, society, and/or the individual, etc. ... the problem is still there and people can only deal with it individually. It seems to me that a lot of people are overly influenced or even completely swayed by other people's opinions, period. It's not just what they think of you ... it's what you should buy, what you should listen to, what is in or out, who is important, what's right or wrong, ad infinitum. It's enough to give you a headache from observation alone.
