NAPLES (Reuters) - Ecuador's leftist President Rafael Correa said Washington must let him open a military base in Miami if the United States wants to keep using an air base on Ecuador's Pacific coast.

Correa has refused to renew Washington's lease on the Manta air base, set to expire in 2009. U.S. officials say it is vital for counter-narcotics surveillance operations on Pacific drug-running routes.

"We'll renew the base on one condition: that they let us put a base in Miami -- an Ecuadorean base," Correa said in an interview during a trip to Italy.

"If there's no problem having foreign soldiers on a country's soil, surely they'll let us have an Ecuadorean base in the United States."

Can we blame them?

*probably still editing for clairity...

Of course, we could close our military base there and just ban all flights to the United States from Ecuador and all flights which have landed in Ecuador if their destination is the United States...private and commercial.

If Ecuador wants to ban all flights from the United States to Ecuador, I don't have a single problem with that.

Hey, when Ecuador starts "protecting" the United States with their military, their tanks, their aircraft...then perhaps Ecuador may be permitted to have a military base in the US.

Until then, this is just grandstanding by a leftist moron. I would close that damned base so fast and withdraw all US forced out of Ecuador this leftist twit wouldn't know what hit him.

Our base there is to interdict drug trafficers...for which we pay for leasing the space for the base...and which adds considerably to their economy.
