John McCain's campaign said Wednesday it has contacted "appropriate authorities" over a report that Republican VP candidate Sarah Palin's personal e-mail had been hacked.

"This is a shocking invasion of the Governor's privacy and a violation of law," campaign manager Rick Davis said in a statement. "The matter has been turned over to the appropriate authorities and we hope that anyone in possession of these emails will destroy them. We will have no further comment."

The statement came hours after a user on the Web site WikiLeaks said he had gained access to Palin's Yahoo e-mail account and gained access. Screenshots of the e-mail messages and photos of the Alaska governor's family were published on that Web site and later on gossip Web site gawker.com.

FBI Spokesman Eric Gonzalez in Anchorage, Alaska confirms to CNN an investigation is underway.

"We are aware of the allegations and we are coordinating with Secret Service as far as the allegation that someone has hacked into Governor Palin's personal e-mail account," he said. "We are going to be working a joint investigation with Secret Service on this."

I hope Palin and McCain don't back off an inch and insist this guy...son of a Dim representative from TN gets prosecuted, convicted and jailed.

These O'Bomber people are totally out of control and McCain needs to hammer O'Bomber publicly for the illegalities committed by his supporters and staff.

Some of his other moron supporters spray painted "Obama" on a McCain/Palin campaign office front.

These are not the usual fun and games and remind me of Kerry supporters going into Bush campaign offices and threatening campaign workers..not to mention slashing tires, breaking windows and crimes in general for which some were caught and prosecuted.

Palin email hacker suspect identified (updated)
Thomas Lifson

No official confirmation yet, but it appears that the suspected email hacker is David Kernnel, son of a Democrat member of the Tennessee state legislature. A lot of material about him has been gathered by Michelle Malkin, Ace, and Gateway Pundit, among others.

I share Ace's concern that thuggish behavior is spreading, and that an utterly ruthless mentality was absorbed by Obama from Alinsky. Rousing a cyber-mob, as was recently done by the Obama campaign with WGN radio twice is consistent with rousing demented lefty hackers, even if there is no overt coordination.

Update from Clarice Feldman:

This report from Fox indicates more than Palin's email was hacked.

"It looks like Sarah Palin wasn't the only target of an online hacker. Law enforcement officials are investigating claims that the private e-mail accounts of the Republican vice presidential candidate's family and staff were also compromised.

"Yesterday, the Department received a referral alleging that the personal e-mail accounts of Gov. Sarah Palin, her staff, and her family had been unlawfully hacked. The Department is reviewing the matter," Justice Department spokeswoman Laura Sweeney said on Thursday.

The FBI and Secret Service launched a formal investigation on Wednesday into the hacking of one of Palin's Yahoo! e-mail accounts. Yahoo! declined to comment Thursday on details of the investigation, citing Palin's privacy and the sensitivity of such investigations"

Update from Rosslyn Smith:

The Nashville Tennesean reports that Rep. Mike Kernell has confirmed his son is the person named on websites.

Lawmaker's son indicted in Palin e-mail hacking
By DOUGLASS K. DANIEL

WASHINGTON - A federal grand jury has indicted the son of a Democratic Tennessee state lawmaker in connection with the hacking of the e-mail account of Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin.

David Kernell, 20, of Knoxville, Tenn., the son of state Rep. Mike Kernell, was scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday before U.S. Magistrate Judge C. Clifford Shirley, according to a statement from the Justice Department.

David Kernell was indicted Tuesday by a federal grand jury in Knoxville for intentionally accessing without authorization the e-mail account of Palin, Alaska's governor, the Justice Department said.

Kernell, an economics major at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, faces a maximum of five years in prison, a $250,000 fine and a three-year term of supervised release.

His father, a Memphis Democrat, is chairman of Tennessee's House Government Operations Committee. Mike Kernell has said he had nothing to do with the hacking incident.

The indictment against David Kernell alleged that on Sept. 16 he reset the password to Palin's personal e-mail account to gain access to it. Authorities say Kernell then read the contents of the account and made screenshots of the e-mail directory, e-mail content and other personal information, later posting some of the information to a public Web site.

The Justice Department said the case was being prosecuted by section chief Michael DuBose and trial attorney Mark Krotoski of the criminal division's computer crime and intellectual property section and Assistant U.S. Attorney Greg Weddle of the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Tennessee. The FBI's Anchorage and Knoxville field offices investigated the case.

Wow, I'm surprised gov. Palin can even operate E-mail.

I guess she's doing better than her cohort. John "blowing the election" McCain.

My guess is the little leftist demoscat shiiit who hacked Palin's email is going to federal prison.

My guess is that if you..Blue had both your shoulders and arms broken over and over in more than 5 years of torture, you wouldn't be sending any emails at all.

Care to participate in a little experiment to find out..Blue?
