Being Annoying Now Illegal In Brighton

Source: http://www.clickondetroit.com/news/18318880/detail.html#-

BRIGHTON, Mich. -- Since when did being annoying become a crime? Since Brighton City Council approved a public conduct code Monday night, which includes fining someone up to $500 for being annoying.

One section of the bill reads, "It shall be unlawful for a person to engage in a course of conduct or repeatedly commit acts that alarm or seriously annoy another person and that serve no legitimate purpose."

The bill also states it's unlawful for anyone to insult, accost, molest or otherwise annoy any person in public.

The ordinance was modeled after one in Royal Oak, where the Brighton police chief previously worked.

The Livingston Daily Press & Argus reported that two council members expressed concerns for the language of the ordinance, but voted for it anyway.

Brighton officials said the ordinance would be subjective and the call will be made by police officers.

The amended ordinance takes effect Jan. 17, 2009.

Too bad we can't get them for international annoyance, or crossing state lines with the intent to annoy. Is there felony annoyance?? I could think of a few people to serve that one on

All those people with car stereos that are too loud. I'd be reporting that all over the place. I don't need to feel anyone else's bass in my car.

I wish I could fine the elderly lady at my work who wants to dress like it's summer, complains that it's too cold, and turns the thermostat up to 77-78.

That woman drives me crazy! I had to turn it down from that temperature three times today. And I'm generous. I'm fine with them going as high as 74, which is on the high end of my comfort spectrum. Looks like I'm going to have to go back to setting a task to remind me to check the thermostat every hour or half hour. Grr..

LTT - the reason for all those british named towns is that brits came over here and took over large tracts of land in every state of the union before they were booted out!! i personally live in a town called fairfax (yes for lord fairfax, who owned it and a good deal else round here) and the main road through my home county is sir francis drake boulevard. at one end is a statue of sir frank imself!!

seems the brits have short memories. not so long ago they were way more imperialistic than the yanks!!

AG - i do believe that those basses shaking your car are ALREADY illegal, tho i don't know that anyone does anything about them!
