A man had just sat down to dinner when there came a knock at the front door. Begrudingly, the man got up to answer it.
There stood an old man in a torn beaten up trenchcoat. "Could you spare a bite to eat?" asked the old man. the man turned to look at his dinner for the last time and invited the man in.
He gave his plate to the old man and said that he had more. The man ate. When he was down to the last yam he looked up at the man as he ate the last bite.
The old man sat back in the chair and said that it was nice to have good people still around and that for his kindness he would pass on a little bit of wisdom.
"There will come a day when you will regret what you've just done." The old man paused for a moment as if to see if the man wanted to reply. When he didn't the old man went on,"When this happens please remember the whole of our conversation and try and understand the lesson."
"Why would I ever regrett it? "You will think me ungrateful." replied the old man. The man was still listening to the old man's words when the old man got up to leave. "Thank you for the lovely dinner but I must be on my way." With that the old man strolled out the door.

Ra, ya never know.

After puzzling over the matter for a time, the man decided the fire was too low. He went out to the porch to get some wood.
He was shocked to find his woodpile scattered. "What in Gettysburg?" he stammered.
He went to pick up a log and felt a sharp pain in his finger. Holding in the yell, he only said, "I stacked this whole pile just a few hours ago and now this."
With his arms full and kissing his finger, he headed into the house. "That makes no sense", he thought throwing a log onto the fire. "I've been right here and I haven't heard a thing." Looking for the poker he added, "Surely I would have heard that."

When the fire was blazing again, he realized that he still hadn't eaten. He went to the cubbard and pulled out bread. In the celler he found some fig perserves and brought them upstairs.
"This will do until morning", he said spreading the perserves. "I don't feel like frying up anymore ham. "And besides", he thought taking a bite, "I don't have anymore yams."

He was up before sunrise, something that was becoming a habit. He hadn't slept well thinking about the old mans' words. As he sat up his throbbing finger reminded him of the wood stack. He still hadn't figured out what had happened. He hadn't heard a thing and the only person besides himself who had been there was the old man. "And why would he do it?"
As the sun came up he went into the yard. The pile wasn't as scattered as he had thought but it still was everywhere. Picking up the closest pieces he turned to put the wood on the stack and saw something gray out of the corner of his eye. It was a piece of fabric. Dropping the wood he picked up the cloth. "Just like the old mans' coat," he mumbled out loud.
"He did do this!" he screamed. "Of all the things.....How could"....he was getting angrier by the moment.
Throwing the pieces of wood on the porch he fumed. "Telling me that I'll regret this." "He should've added, because I just flung your woodpile all over your yard you stupid fool." "Ha Ha! Feed me and I'll give you some wisdom." "Yeah, I wish he'd come back and I'd teach him something." "How stupid are you?" he asked himself.
As he flung the last piece onto the pile, a piece feel and landed on his foot. Yelling out loud, he kicked at it and stormed into the house.
