If you're interested in collaborating with me on music, I'm setting up a myspace band page where you'll be able to hear my unfinished songs and write lyrics for me. This first one I'm setting up right now. There's going to be one version with an oboe sound imitating what could be the singing melody, so that the more technical of you can have some framework to work from. Then I'll also put up a version without the oboe, so those of you who'd rather work without restriction can do so.

This first song is fairly simple and doesn't contain a bridge. I'm an experienced musician, but I'm new to recording. I'm also new to finishing songs without anyone's help. Perhaps it's the Gemini in me, but I often creates snippets of songs, but don't end up finishing them.

Well, it took forever just to get one version of the song uploaded, so I'm gonna leave it at that for now. For some reason the sound on the song seems pretty off. The bass is far too accentuated. It's still a decent representation of the song, though.

Here's the site: http://www.myspace.com/omsfriends

I listened to "untitled" and would be interested in collaborating. My lyrical history is pretty extensive and I work well in most genres.

My email is dafremen@gmail.com.

I can email you as well, but in the mean time, do you sing as well?

I've always thought it would be cool to collaborate musically with people over the internet. It's only happened once with a singer so far.

Nice to see you A.G. I DO sing, as a matter of fact. If you like, I can send you a recording. What I don't know how to do is play. I only bang out Drop D chords right now.

Excellent!

I guess the other question would be do you have a mic for your computer? If so, you could probably record the vocal track, and either throw it on top of the musical tracks yourself if you have the capability (I could email you the music), or I could splice it in (and add effects and so forth) on my side.

That particular song needs some tweeks I haven't performed yet. A couple of the lead guitar parts need to be perfected timing-wise. I also want to incorporate more realistic sounding drums. The intended bridge sounds more like a guitar solo at the moment, so I'm not sure whether that guitar should stay or go. The things I'm not sure about with regard to that song are:

- Is it too long?
- Does it require more musical parts, and if so from what instruments?

It's unfortunate that I don't devote more time to my music, but it would be cool to have someone to collaborate with. I always wanted PixelPixie to do music with me as well.

Music's always been a confusion for me in that I've never figured out whether I'm supposed to go it alone, or whether I'm supposed to serve another person or band in some capacity.

I have similar issues.

Generally, what happens is that people don't want to collaborate. They want someone to help them finish their projects..without reciprocation.

That's just based on past experience mind you. I'm hopeful for something productive and worthwhile..of course.

Why not just pick a song at random?

Explain what you felt/saw/were thinking when you composed it (or when you hear it), and I'll see if anything flows.

If it doesn't, I'll try with a different one. Or you could send the ones you'd like lyrics for...and I'll pick one.

Then you can decide if you like the result and if so, we can proceed from there.

I currently have a program for doing basic mixing/mastering and hall effects. I use a Soundblaster Live 24bit for recording both with a mike and an instrument adapted to fit..One on right, the other on left.

Alternatively, I can record either or both as two track monaural.

There's also a Fender F-50 Steel String with a Dan Lace "in hole" pickup to do basic concept recording.
[Pretty early on it became clear that I had to pick up a guitar or no musician was going to
A) Take me seriously
B)Understand what I was hearing in my head
It turned out that B didn't matter that much. I guess in the end, neither did A. ]

My son plays drums. My friend plays bass. (He's always busy though.)

Looking forward to your email and the experiment.

I've gotta get going to my improv class tonight, but here's some more stuff (mostly not songs to be sung to) that I've done:
http://www.acidplanet.com/artist.asp?AID=549785&T=5023
http://www.acidplanet.com/artist.asp?aid=569508&t=2113
http://www.acidplanet.com/artist.asp?aid=553510&t=7613

Mostly loop-based stuff and battles, but there is a remix of someone else's song that I started and never completed.

Hopefully the slave drivers in academia don't work you too hard. I left you a couple of mixes..and I'm working on a start to finish rough draft that we can listen to and discuss.

Fortunately it's hardly academia. Community classes through a neighboring city. Very informal training, and the stuff we do is akin to Whose Line Is It Anyway? It's a heck of a lot of fun.

I'll ask to join in one cold day when Cappie gives approval or I overthrow him or persuade him or strike a deal or something. 'til then, too shy and too busy trying to convince myself (through practice and the power of positive thinking) that my singing isn't completely humiliating. I listened to some streaming video though and I like a couple of your songs a lot. You are really talented. There was a really short twenty second thing that immediately killed me, but I have obviously been reincarnated.
Sorry if that was lame but I have went past my interesting things to say for the day limit.

I'm pleased to say that Daf did good in his offering. He definitely lived up to his 12th house Libra-ness both in being able to sing as well as being able to write engagingly.

The disk drive for the keyboard that song was created on was actually destroyed by a Libra's birthday party at my house. They came crashing through the front door that night, the door hit my wall hard enough to knock my keyboard over onto it's disk drive, and it hasn't worked since. (It's a long, heavy keyboard, so the fall was severe enough to have such an effect.) I say that only to say that tweaking of what is existing is possible, but unfortunately I don't have access to the raw tracks anymore without a drive and a keyboard to interpret them. Could still do vocals/instrumentals over the existing, though, if the song is adequate in the form it's in. Or, if it ends up being worth it, could re-record it from scratch possibly.

It would be interesting to hear your take.

MM,

I don't have access to YouTube at work unfortunately.

Whoops! I'm back to recant what I said above. The song HSC was referring to was not the one I thought he was talking about. I thought he was talking about the dated one on the MySpace page. (The one he's talking about is on AcidPlanet.) I do have everything for the song he's talking about, so it'll be much easier to edit and splice together. That one probably would be a good one to go back and put together as well.
