Her Kind I have gone out, a possessed witch haunting the black air, braver at night; dreaming evil, I have done my hitch over the plain houses, light by light: lonely thing, twelve-fingered, out of mind. A woman like that is not a woman, quite. I have been her kind. I have found the warm caves in the woods, filled them with skillets, carvings, shelves, closets, silks, innumerable goods; fixed the suppers for the worms and the elves: whining, rearranging the disalign. A woman like that is misunderstood. I have been her kind. I have ridden in your cart, driver, waved my nude arms at villages going by, learning the last bright routes, survivor where your flames still bite my thigh and my ribs crack where your wheels wind. A woman like that is not ashamed to die. I have been her kind.

I don't know whether to like Anne Sexton's poetry or not; excellent way of putting things, but too personal for my liking.Sometimes I wonder whether certain poets actually feel whatever they're writing about, although in her case I do believe it to be sincere, due to mental illness etc. IP: Logged |

Xena,Empathy is a gift of every great dramatic writer. Whether she is depicting personal experience, or exhibiting a more complete effort of imagination, the result is the same; a remarkable work. Although I would call it more impressive, were it not the least bit "sincere", like you, I believe it is almost as autobiographical as it appears. I doubt she was ever a witch, living in caves, etc. It is metaphorical for something we've all felt, in some degree. And, yes, I believe she felt it very palpably.

My girlfriend identifies really strongly with Anne Sexton. Though she's always been beautiful, she grew up seeing herself as a monster. She became a gothic, witchy girl, who didnt let anyone touch her until she was 19. Now she's pretty well open and freespirited, more like a hippy. This poem meant a lot to her when she was in her cocoon.IP: Logged |
