It's going alright, though I haven't bought my materials yet. May start purchasing them this weekend. My improv teacher let me in on something handy: if you sign up for the newsletter or whatever at Michaels and JoAnn Fabrics, they immediately send you a 40% off coupon (and then apparently keep sending them). It worked. Aaron Brothers also sent me a 20% off coupon.

I've also put out a wish for painting supplies on my local Freecycle group board, so I'll see if that bears any fruit. Freecycle's a pretty cool concept I also learned about through my Capricorn improv teacher.

I have another non-painting-related art project I want to do for my room. I think it's clever. I'll let you know when that's done. I haven't started it yet.

My computer has stopped connecting to the internet at the moment, so I'm only intermittently here myself. I'm going to try to fix it once again in a bit.

____________

I guess I'll just edit since my post is last anyway.

June 8: My little projector came today. I tested it real quick in a hallway that's reasonably dark. It's sharp. Works great. And it came with one of those energy saving bulbs, so I guess it will last a long time. I also guess it won't get as hot as a standard bulb, which should be good.

I tried it more after I posted the above, and it's pretty awesome. I have photo of a friend that is an awesome photo to begin with. I created a sort of outlined version of it in Photoshop Elements. I printed that out with the black ink cartridge only, and set it up under the projector about 11' from my room wall. It took up almost the whole wall floor to ceiling, and it looked amazing. I could have easily painted the outline.

The Journey

One day you finally knew
what you had to do, and began,
though the voices around you
kept shouting their bad advice--
though the whole house
began to tremble
and you felt the old tug
at your ankles.
"Mend my life!"
each voice cried.
But you didn't stop.
You knew what you had to do,
though the wind pried
with its stiff fingers
at the very foundations,
though their melancholy
was terrible.
It was already late
enough, and a wild night,
and the road full of fallen
branches and stones.
But little by little,
as you left their voices behind,
the stars began to burn
through the sheets of clouds,
and there was a new voice
which you slowly
recognized as your own,
that kept you company
as you strode deeper and deeper
into the world,
determined to do
the only thing you could do--
determined to save
the only life you could save.

Nice poem.

Wow, AG! It sounds so cool. The projector is going to come in really handy. I cannot wait to see what you come up with! I get the feeling I will have to rely on my Taurean patience.... and that's okay.

The way youre going, you wont end up wasting tons of supplies, time and energy, like i often do.

You're sooo right!

I haven't even begun purchasing my painting arsenal. Hopefully, this weekend I'll get to it.

On the upside, if I do create something using the projector's help, it's practically destined to be good (and faster than without the projector).

AG,

lol an "arsenal", that's what it is - or what you have to equip yourself with or build....and it's not cheap!

The projector will help, but it won't paint it for you. In any case, i have a feeling it will turn out great.

Valus,

When I was in a coffee shop this morning I saw what you wrote and now it's gone...I didnt have time to respond.

Sorry, I've been having a hard time reading poetry lately...and books, for that matter.

I finally watched some of the videos. That guy is a degenerate! What the hell kind of painting is that? My roommate was all perturbed by his painting over the carpet so blatantly.

Thanks S. It's lovely. Yes, it's got a Virgo flavor.
I think when you take your next trip, you should come back with a drawing... What do you say?

AG, I was perturbed by that too.

If you paint on large canvases, do you just not use an easel? It seems like all the easels only accomodate canvases up to like 30" tall maximum.

Valus be proud... whilst I kick myself for being so impulsive. I have my basics...minus gesso. Only went for 16" x 20" canvases as my bill was already reaching the point of discomfort.

So I just used my projector, and traced my best friend and his wife's outlines on my canvas...

Now I realize that this won't really serve me too well unless I really want to put the paint on with painstaking detail. I think I need to paint a background color, and then trace.

Hi! Actually I never use an easel. I was given one, but I can't use it because I got used to doing it my way.

For a canvas that size I would lean it up agains something and protect the floor and also work on it while flat on the floor. Really watery mixtures of paint will run down when leaned and you might like that effect.

This can be tough on the legs, knees and back/neck though, so maybe put it up on a table so you can stand and do it.

When working on paper I use a piece of smooth wood I got at Home Depot instead of an expensive drawing board.

Do their faces show through at all, using the projector? To at least help you get their proportions right?

I haven't done anything since tracing their images in pencil. I think I'll need to do a background wash, and then maybe just paint them instead of tracing. (I read a recommendation yesterday that you sketch in paint rather than pencil, because pencil can show through.)

I told my roommate that I planned on painting outside on my patio, but for using the projector, it seems that it might be better to do those details inside. I sense that I can be tidy with paint inside, though I will have to be careful.

I'm really having to strategize my use of the projector. I think I may end up taking it out on the patio with me at night. That way I can just fill in the image with paint instead of drawing. The picture I'm working off of is nearly black and white, so I think I'm going to stick with that theme and start with white and grey as the skin tones.

i want to see if i can figure out the scanner in my mom's office (upstairs) so i can scan some of my drawings for you guys. i draw weirdos, lots of eyes, and grotesque profiles. Stuff like that. i have this 3/4 profile i did with chalks, years ago, of some greenish guy and i think it looks really cool. i took an art class one summer with this artist lady and she said i had more natural talent than anyone she'd ever seen. People have always said stuff like that about me.. that i have this vast potential. But they don't see how scattered, restless, impulsive and spontaneous my energies are. Anyone who takes their time and puts in some effort, can draw a better picture than I can. But sometimes I sketch something, when I'm in the mood, that suggests a reservoir of talent. It just never comes to the surface, because I dont have the patience. I'm too anxious and my attention span is too short. I mean, when I give my attention to something, I really give my attention to it, but, just, not for long. I have all these awesome eyes, with no faces, or faces with no bodies..

anyway,

love

Sounds good AG It might look nice if you changed some of the greys to blues or grey-blues too.

That was very encouraging of your teacher to say Valus.
Looking forward to seeing.
