wow.

most amazing is it was done with ballpoint pens!

Samuel Silva, a 29-year-old attorney in Portugal, has shocked and delighted countless viewers online this week when he uploaded a stunning painting that many mistook for a photograph.

As Colossal notes, the artwork, which was created using only Bic ballpoint pens, is based on this photograph by Russian photographer Kristina Tararina.

Silva, who describes his incredible artwork as nothing more than a hobby, even answered questions on his website deviantART after the illustration of the girl first drew attention on Reddit.

Using only eight different colors, the self-taught Silva told readers that he completed the drawing in about 30 hours. "Ballpoint pens are as underestimated as they are a powerful medium," Silva writes on his site. "It's not about what you use, it's about how you use it."

Silva has also uploaded some of his other lifelike illustrations, which include portraits of tigers, a Japanese palace garden and a newborn baby.

And he promises a wider variety of artwork in the future, writing on his site, "Ballpoint pen is not my only medium, it's just the one I'm currently trying to master. At this point in my life I'm proficient with chalk, pencil, color pencil, pastels, oils and acrylics. Maybe one day I'll create an account just to share those."

another of Silva's masterful ballpoint drawings.

While I agree with this commenter, and have never been a fan of really realistic work, there is no denying it's extremely jawdroppingly impressive. Especially when you consider the medium he used.

Robert:

Very, very skilled work, but where's the interpretaion? What about this is art? It's a copy. A nearly perfect copy, but it's just a copy. Put that incredible skill to use to create something new. Don't show us what the photographer saw, show us what YOU see.

I'm more of the type who goes for a realistic copy - set the scene, and not only take a photograph, but manage to draw it, and so well? It takes great skill either way. And tghis is where I get on my high horse about some people out there not appreciating that this is actual work. Some will say, "Oh, I wish I could do that" only to turn around and dismiss it as anything but a hobby, and it bugs the **** out of me.

I think it's amazing, too. ball-point pens.

I can't wait to see your work someday. & i can see your pov. It also bugs the crap out of me that people don't realize that it's not just a fun cutsey hobby and is oftentimes grueling - to mind body and soul. Not to mention expensive.

You just reminded me of something .... a website i stumbled across awhile back in which a bunch of artists took a class and all painted the same subject. You wouldnt believe how different they all came out. Was quite interesting to see the different interpretations.

I'm going to start a new thread to see if anyone wants to do something similar, because i find it so intriguing. Might be a nice exercise. I find it fascinating to see how others interpret things and put them on paper, canvas etc.

Hope youre well. I havent heard from you in awhile.
