In January it’s so nice
While slipping on the sliding ice
To guzzle chicken soup with rice...

Le Fleurs du Mal / by Charles Baudelaire

Sonnet XXVIII

With pearly robes that wave within the wind,
Even when she walks, she seems to dance,
Like swaying serpents round those wands entwined
Which fakirs ware in rhythmic elegance.

So like the desert's Blue, and the sands remote,
Both, deaf to mortal suffering and to strife,
Or like the sea-weeds 'neath the waves that float,
Indifferently she moulds her budding life.

Her polished eyes are made of minerals bright,
And in her mien, symbolical and cold,
Wherein an angel mingles with a sphinx of old,

Where all is gold, and steel, and gems, and light,
There shines, just like a useless star eternally,
The sterile woman's frigid majesty.

Like starry blooms on a new firmament,
White lilies float and regally abide.
In vain the cruel skies their hot rays shed;
The lily does not feel their brazen glare.
In vain the pallid clouds refuse to share
Their dews, the lily feels no thirst, no dread.
Unharmed she lifts her queenly face and head;
She drinks of living waters and keeps fair.

These Helen Hunt Jacksons are so picturesque!

P.S. (Nice addition for May! Eternal Energy ..)

And yellow still the corn sheaves, stacked among

Her utmost gold. To highest boughs have leaped
The purple grape,--last thing to ripen, late

O Heart, remember, vintages are lost

Think, while thou sunnest thyself in Joy's estate,
Mayhap thou canst not ripen without frost!
