She stood there, patiently, the Princess of England and heir to the throne. Her hands customarily folded at her knees. Her dress was pink, her favorite color.
The adults were speaking of her future. Thomas Wolsey to write the Pope. Thomas Moore to arrange everything, and her parents beaming proudly. Princess Mary was a quiet child but both of her parents were outgoing and boisterous. She liked to cling to her Mother for the mighty aura she radiated, and she loved being taken on her tall Father's shoulders. It was them who had personally taken it upon themselves for her education. The Queen taught her Latin and Spanish and her pursuits of knowledge, this being writing, arithmetic, and reading. Her Father had taught her to play the lute and the clavichord.
She hadn't wanted to marry the Dauphine, simply because Span and France were enemy's as her Mother had always described, and she was proud of her Spanish heritage, just like her Mother.
"You, Mary are the granddaughter of the great Isabella of Castile. A woman can rule just as well as a man, just as your Grandmother." Her Mother's eyes sparkled when she spoke of her own Mother. And anywhere Catherine went, Mary was sure to follow and keep close. Save, when her Father wanted to spend time with her. She didn't know much of the world beyond that she was the adoration of everybody at Court.
"Now," spoke Lord Moore. "I shall send for the King of Spain, and the betrothal shall be formally be arranged." Queen Catherine's face beamed and so did King Henry's.
"What think you daughter?" Asked the Queen.
"I should think that whatever Mama and Papa think good, I also do." And the four adults laughed. At eight years old, she was a charming girl, though she did not mean to be.
The King snatched his daughter up and twirled her about and she laughed with delight.

The King had forgotten of her for a time. And she was grateful.
She stood affront the Queen now.
"Lady Anne," she said. "I would like to grant you a husband of your choice." Anne knew exactly why she was doing this, she was grateful that she had refused her husband advances towards her and now that their daughter was betrothed to the King of Spain, and wanted to reward her earnestly.
"I...I don't know who I should select, Your Grace..."
"Be patient, take your pick of any man at Court, and I shall make it so."
"Thank you, Your Grace, and bowed, smiling. She was glad to see that the Queen was being so kindly to her, and in ways she began to suppose that Anne Boleyn had become the Queen's favorite Lady-in-Waiting.

The sixth Earl of Northumberland was a quiet, reserved man and Anne had taken a shining to him, not too much, but he would make a good husband, and that way she could retire to the North and lead a quiet pleasant life. The North with it's many sheep. She imagined herself sitting in the grass and writing poetry to their beautiful bleating sounds. And indeed, she had begun to notice Thomas Percy's eyes on her.
They did not know each other well, but that was all right. In time, he would be able to boast of his beautiful and fashionable Wife, and she would retire from Court. At nineteen, it all seemed so simple.
She came to him in his chambers.
"Thomas Percy, the Queen hath granted me marriage of my choice, and seeing as how the both of us wish for a quiet life, I would like inquire if you should like to be thus."
He rose, his light brown hair lined his narrow cheek bones, he was attractive and even his smile did not break their beauty.
He took her arms in his own and laid a kiss on her lips.
"You and I shall live a happy life Anne."
And she kissed him back. For the first time in her life, she was beginning to understand what love was. Love was devotion and quiet admiration. Love was Thomas.
The next day she presented him a poem.
"Come see, my Betrothed." She spoke. And smiling he wrapped his arm about her as she read it to him.

'Together you and I
How the beauty twinkles in thine eye
Oh, my dear, leave me not
May I give thee a beautiful lot
As day doth turn to night
So too shall we retire right.'

"I like that," he said, and tightened his grip about her. "You began each line with the letters of my name." She kissed him. He was a tall, thin, bony man, but his face was the most handsome she had ever seen. They kissed again.

King Charles of Spain had been fashionably late in arriving to England to gaze for the first time upon his betrothed.
He was a young man of twenty three, and he satisfied his needs with beautiful young women. However, marriage was a different matter, and though his cousin was eight, he had heard that she was very beautiful, not that he would take her that young. Indeed twelve was the age of consent in that world. He would have to wait four years, but this was all right because formal alliances needed to be created, it was the way of things. As he entered Westminster, there stood his Aunt, beaming with admiration. It was clear by all those present that this was something of great importance, all the Queen's Lady's stood behind her, and all the King's Courtiers were likewise.
