I'm just looking for some insight into this card. I understand what it means upright, but I'm stuck as to what it means reversed. It happened to come up twice as the Outcome card in some readings I did for myself. I contemplating a major move within the next few months and I dont know what this card is trying to tell me - I havent picked up my cards in awhile and I feel really confused about this reading.

Upright it shows "rest, recuperation, retreat, etc." Does that mean reversed it would show that it's a good time to make a move? The "rest-time" is over? Or does it show that these meanings will be stronger or more negative?

I know sometimes a reversed card shows the opposite of the upright meaning. But other cards show that the upright meaning is even stronger when reversed? Which one to go with.....?

I only have one Tarot book ATM (I let someone borrow the others and havent seen them since) and it doesnt give reversed meanings. I'm going to do some research on the web, but I'm interested in anyones comments and I'd greatly appreciate it. Thank you.

I dont think that the reversed is neccesarily opposite as it is lacking what the upright position means. So maybe it means that the outcome will cause you to lose rest, and maybe you will need rest after all is said and done.

Thank you miss_apples. I didnt even think of it that way. I found it significant that it came up reversed in the same position twice. Once last night and again today, for the same question.

I asked for some guidance in my dreams before I went to bed last night and had some amazing dreams. The emotions/feelings to the dreams were positive and I found myself in a different area around alot of people that I dont know right now but seemed to know them well in the dream. In the dream I was going back to school and I was looking at some beautiful paintings that I had done. In waking life I don't plan on going back to "school-school", but have been in a major learning/growing cycle on my own. More in the sense of being my own teacher and learning all I can from life and books. And I have been painting alot lately, especially over the past few days.

Looking at my Solar return chart for this year it seems it is going to be an important year with some major changes (SR Sun conj. MC). Unlike this past year which, if I had to put a Tarot card to, it would be the Hermit. (Solar Return Sun, Moon & NN were in the 12th .)

Anyway....sorry just rambling here - moon's in Gemini conj. my Venus right now. LOL I am really curious to the meaning of that card. Thank you for your insight, I appreciate it. Just thought I would "put some stuff out there", to see what would "come back".

Greetings...

I think all the 4's relate to a "time" element, whether it be a delay or a "stop the world I wanna get off for a while".

When this 4 is reversed, as long as there are no high Swords cards (8 - 9 - 10) in the reading, then I look at this card as recovery is complete, illness is on the mend and the time for action is arriving. If the high Swords I just mentioned are there showing stressors and possibilities of ill health, then now might not be a good time to make a move.

Reversals are not always impediments, nor are they always the "opposite" meaning from the upright. Sometimes they function like a retrograde planet in Astrology showing an inward turn of the energy, rather than an ability to use the energies directly, if that makes any sense!

Other time the reversal will amplify the meaning of the card, particularly the 5 of Swords, which I regard as one of the "worst" cards in the deck. (if that can be said to be true of any of the cards) This 5 is no better reversed than upright in my experience, and does not bode well for friendships, relationships and partnerships of ANY type, as to me it shows that there is a gain over another by violent, or underhanded means. I think the crossed swords in the card tell alot about the true meaning of this card. There is also one very obvious "winner" who seems to benefit from the altercation, if you will, to the disadvantage of another. In other word this cards is a " I win / you lose" vibration, and does not generally show up in a win-win scenario.

At any rate, I'm tired and blizzard bound at the moment, so I may not be making as much sense as I'd like. But I think the gist is there.

Good luck and blessings...

Thank you Aselzion. You made great sense. Your interpretation of the card seems right on point to what is going on now. "The time for action IS arriving". I can feel it. Alot of things are just about "complete" and it's almost time to take a step into a new direction. Just exactly what that step will be, I dont know yet. But I know when the time is right, I will, and it will all work out.

There were not any high Swords in the spread, so that's good.

Wow, that's a great tid-bit. Good to know and makes perfect sense.

I know what you mean about the energy of the 5 of Swords. I've never like seeing that card come up. That one, and the 5 of Pentacles. I've never liked that card either.

Well thank you again. I've got to get back into the Tarot - flex those muscles - it's been awhile.

I'm a blizzard bound New Englander as well and off to bed myself. Thanks for your insight. I really appreciate it. Stay warm!

Hardly anyone likes the 5 of pentacles. It scares many people. In my Gendron deck the 5 of pents is beautiful, it shows a woman like, showering in a waterfall. Not a scary image at all, however when I showed my sister in law my cards she picked that card out and said "this card scares me"

I just think its a card that is misunderstood

But I can see all the 4's as being "stuck in a rut" or "inactivity" cards. So reversed meaning "ready for action" makes sense.

And 26Taurus, I ask for spiritual info in dream form before I go to sleep also, and when I do I almost always dream about being in school. Its cool to hear someone else asks for info in dream form too

Yes, the 5 of Pentacles is a card that shows one that, as tough as things seem, there is help surrounding them, that they cant or choose not to see. Or hasnt come into their awareness yet. The two figures are struggling but at the same time, they are outside of a church window. It is showing a misalignment with their spirituality and their material world. These two need to be united. The figures seem to be stuck in their own inner world or prison. And the fact that it is snowing out, winter time tells alot. The poor woman in the picture is barefoot!! It's a depressing card to me. But in everything, positivity can be found if one knows what to look for. The Pentacles being about resources, with this card particularly, shows that resources are there, but havent been found yet.

To me this card is all about opening your eyes. Awakening. Getting out of your own mental bars. Reuniting your physical and spiritual worlds. Finding an alignment with them.

About guidance in dreams. I learned something recently about paying particular attention to the emotions/feelings of your dreams. They can tell even more than the events in the dream itself in a way. Dreams really are a prelude to what is to come in our waking lives. And the emotions of our dreams can give us a clue to where are waking thoughts have been concentrated upon in waking life. And as we know, our waking thoughts will eventually manifest themselves. So dreams can be a good window to look through to see what we are going to be bringing into our lives through our thoughts. We might not even realize how negative our waking thoughts are. Especially if we are used to thinking a certain way. It's worth paying attention to and focusing on transforming.

I hate that 5 Pentacles but I don't mind it in the Osho Zen Tarot deck (called 5 Rainbows). The card is called "The Outsider" and it shows a small child in overalls, standing on one side of a gate, holding onto the bar and peering through to the other side.

The gate has a chain and is padlocked (only the padlock is open but the child doesn't recognise this). The card speaks of self-imposed boundaries and restrictions.

Have you guys seen the reversed Rider/Waite deck? It shows the cards from a different angle so the 5 Pentacles shows the inside rather than the outside of the church. I can never remember that deck name though? Do you know the one I'm talking about? I'll see if I can dig up a link.

Greetings...

Just a brief word...

The cards, like Astrology may be used and read on many levels, spiritual, emotional, psychological... to be sure. However, I think that the material level is also important, and in this sense I differ with most modern astrologers. Though I believe we can control our fate and all that happy, fluffy stuff...

I also believe that there are some very nasty things out there that can and do fall into peoples lives. The "negative" cards will accurately reflect those actual, physical, or material "negative" circumstances. How we choose to "deal with" those circumstances is most definitely under our control.. or "can be" if we are enlightened enough to work on making it so.

But... people lose their jobs, lose their homes, and lose loved ones.. all of which can and often does show up in a Tarot reading. We do our clients no service if we ignore the possibilities that these cards imply, and we have a unique ability to forewarn and therefor forearm them. This in no way means that we must scare the be-jeezus out of them. But a well chosen word or insight can often go a long way in helping them to face and deal with the possibilities of negative circumstances.

To say a card is misunderstood.. well that may or may not be the case, but I do believe that they accurately reflect circumstances on many and all levels. And also, let's face it... most shiny, happy people aren't the ones that are looking for a reading... it is the person in turmoil, or confusion who is seeking clarity and hope for a better future. I think it is our responsibility as readers to discuss the potentials and offer ways "around" some of the unpleasantness that "may occur if things are not changed before they reach this point".

I hope that makes sense, and I bid you Peace...

Of course negative things do happen in life, but I personally believe there is a positive side of everything and a way out of everything. As much as it is irresponsible for a reader to only point out the positive and ignore the negative I think its also irresponsible to focus on the negative and lead the querent to believe there is no way for them to overcome the negative either.

I think the 5 of pents is misunderstood because I personally think in the card it shows that there are resources to help them. In the rider-waite deck it shows them outside of what looks like a church, where they can ask for assistance. I think a lot of people fail to see that when they see the 5 of pentacles.

Found it, that deck I was talking about is called Tarot of the New Vision. Here's a link to a review:

Greetings...

I did not mean to imply that only negative connotations must be given to a certain card.

Of course for each door that closes God opens another.

What I was talking about was simply that we cannot always overthink or psychologize the Tarot, as I believe that does a disservice to the inquiring mind.

When discussing the negative implications, there are always positive aspects or advice that may be given to alter or alleviate the negative outcomes. However, I think that we need to discuss all the possibilities with a client so that they may make an informed decision.

I am more than aware that one single change in the Path that a querent is following can totally negate any "prediction" that we make with Tarot, or Astrology for that matter. But in order to make that change, it is our job as readers to counsel them about the Path they are on and the possible consequences or rewards, so that they may use the information with wisdom and grace.

I hope that helps to clarify my meaning...

In the Light..
