hello everyone

i have a deck of tarot and i have been trying to learn it, like properly. but i don't know how to start it, because i'm quite used to oracle cards and i'm good at them, but i feel like they are different from tarot. I have a general idea and i have plenty of material handy, but i don't know where to start it from. i have been occasionally drawing a card or two, and try to read them, like i see them. but its different in way that i don't know how to read them with respect to a question, because in Lenormand cards, we read cards according to their position and the surrounding cards e.g snake with fox is bad, but snake with clover is good. so how do i start and how do i move forward with it? what is the "way" to read them? or do i have to just go with intuition?
can i assign my own meanings or they have to be the "standardized" ones?

Thank you so much.

LBA,

You rock at the Oracle cards!

I got started using the book that came with my Tarot cards (the Secret Tarot) to help me figure out how to interpret the cards; there are also great websites with interpretations like Biddy Tarot & Aeclectic Tarot. Over time, the meanings have sunk in, and I'm able to get the gist by myself now without needing to consult the book as much as before. Ideally, I think you allow your intuition to take over and interpret the images on the card to help you get a better sense for the situation. The card placements (like you do with the Oracle cards) can be meaningful as well. For instance, if the Hierophant appears between two court cards in a reading on marriage, it can represent a priest physically standing between the two. The cards together tell the story, which is what I'm learning as I practice..

Happy divining!
Sunshine

i agree with sunshine9 - take the booklet that comes with the deck and study it, learn what each card is "supposed" to mean and then really look at the artwork and symbolism and see how it relates to the book's meaning.

my first deck was the Rider-Waite...i gave up on the book that came with it and started to look at the story told through the imagery on each card. use your intuition. i believe that is how tarot works anyway (meaning created by your intuition).

a friend gave me the aleister crowley Thoth deck and each one is pretty self-explanatory because it has a word to sum it up, like "Love", "Disappointment", etc...in addition to "2 of cups", "5 of cups", etc..

i read that deck more easily because it makes more sense to me, but i still had to read the book that came with it because Love and Disappointment don't really encompass the ENTIRE meaning, including the good/bad side of each word.

keep practicing which deck do you have?

When in doubt, meditate on the cards...
