Here's a basic question -

Is there a standard way of selecting cards or do tarot readers use different methods? The one I am familiar with is laying the cards in a row and picking the number required.

Does anyone shuffle and simply pick the top card or cards?

I occasionally do that. I usually deal out, shuffle, and then deal into two or three piles, and then pick a pile to work with (sometimes both, if I only laid out two piles).
